Just four months ago, I became a member of the New Mom Society. The moment my daughter entered the world, everything shifted in my life.
Is that statement a bit dramatic? Perhaps.
Is it true? Absolutely.
When you step into the New Mom Society, you won’t receive a fancy membership card or a celebratory gathering. However, you will embark on a rollercoaster of incredible, maddening, joyful, and perplexing moments that will connect you to your fellow “New Mom Society” members.
Curious about what it’s like? New motherhood is…
- A practice in selflessness most of the time.
- A constant stream of self-doubt about whether you’re doing things correctly.
- Hosting more visitors than ever, only to realize they’re not there for you.
- A longing for your pre-baby life, followed by forgetting what that life even looked like, yet knowing you wouldn’t trade your current reality for anything.
- Crying when your baby cries, and also when you leave them for the first time.
- Shedding tears over every milestone your little one achieves.
- Recognizing that all the preparation you did was mostly for naught, yet you’ll manage just fine.
- Feeling a newfound respect for your own mother (seriously, give her a call to say “thanks”).
- Watching your partner interact with your child and discovering a fresh depth of love for them.
- Finally grasping the unconditional love your parents have for you.
- Facing an epic amount of leaking.
- Experiencing days that stretch on forever while months seem to vanish in the blink of an eye.
- Transitioning from a life of familiar freedoms to one filled with unpredictable changes.
- Relishing a dentist appointment as the only “me” time you’ll have all week.
- Sniffing stains to discern whether it’s pee, spit-up, breast milk, or something else entirely.
- Instinctively reaching out to block or catch any leaks of bodily fluids.
- Discussing poop at least five times a day.
- Accepting a whole new level of hygiene standards—every other day for a shower feels like a win!
- Adjusting to new sleep standards; getting a four-hour stretch? You’re living the dream!
- Letting go of all the judgments you once held about parenting before you became one.
- Wondering if that other new mom you see on the street is secretly hoping you’ll approach her to chat and befriend her (she is!).
- Going back to work while fretting that you’re not spending enough time with your baby.
- Staying home and worrying that your child would thrive better in a more stimulating environment.
- Working from home and feeling torn because it seems neither your work nor your baby is getting the attention they deserve.
- Worrying.
New motherhood is powerful, challenging, overwhelming, exhilarating… and beautiful—even when you’re covered in various bodily fluids.
