11 Things I’m Grateful For This Thanksgiving

Every year, my family takes on the task of hosting Thanksgiving at our home. One cherished tradition we uphold is gathering around the table to express our gratitude before diving into the feast. While the room fills with a chorus of thanks for the usual suspects—health, family, shelter, and the privilege of living in this great nation—here are 11 unique things that I genuinely appreciate:

  1. I’m grateful for kids who sleep in until at least 8 a.m. Even more so for those who, upon waking, head straight to the family room, turn on the Thanksgiving parade, pour themselves a glass of chocolate milk, and don’t bother me until at least 9 a.m. That’s a true blessing.
  2. I truly appreciate that we are NOT a family that participates in any Turkey Trot or 5K run on Thanksgiving. While I admire those who choose to exercise on a day dedicated to indulgence, I decided to stick to the couch after contemplating a local Turkey Trot last year.
  3. Wine. The large bottles. Enough said.
  4. I’m thankful for family members who come to our gathering and engage the kids in football, video games, or board games while I’m in the kitchen preparing a feast. They could be teaching the kids how to build rockets in the backyard, and I wouldn’t mind as long as the little ones are occupied while I wrestle a massive turkey out of the oven.
  5. I’m thankful for the rare instance of getting through the day without my children bickering. (Ha!)
  6. Similarly, I’m grateful when the adults manage to avoid squabbles as well. (Double ha!)
  7. I cherish any day I don’t have to squeeze into a swimsuit, especially when countless dishes are being served. Honestly, the Fourth of July pales in comparison.
  8. Did I mention the wine?
  9. I’m incredibly grateful for those who spring into action to clear the table right after the meal—every plate, utensil, and glass whisked away, transforming into cleanup machines in my kitchen. Once all the dirty dishes are cleaned and tucked away, I can’t help but want to hug them in appreciation.
  10. I’m thankful that our home only hosts Thanksgiving and not any other holidays.
  11. And of course, I’m grateful for leftovers; they’re a delicious reminder of the day.
