The Woes of the Early Rising Parent

It’s 7:23 AM, and I’ve already been awake for an hour and eight minutes—on a Saturday, no less! In our household, pre-7 AM wake-ups are strictly prohibited, yet here I am, confronting the day well before the sun has even thought about rising.

As I sit here, one hour and ten minutes into this unexpected morning, I find myself wishing it was time to crawl back into bed. Alas, that’s not an option, so here’s how I plan to fill my time instead:

  1. Mourn the Sleep I’ll Never Get Back: It’s totally fine to shed a tear over the lost opportunity for a long lie-in.
  2. Evaluate the Kids’ Worth on eBay: I won’t mention the “early risers” part, of course.
  3. Curse My Neighbors: Their homes are still cloaked in darkness, blissfully unaware of my plight.
  4. Regret My Late-Night Binge: Watching “just one more” episode of a show is always a bad idea.
  5. Scroll Through Social Media: I’ll connect with fellow sleepless parents on Facebook and Twitter.
  6. Draft Invention Plans: I’ll create elaborate rules and reward systems to keep the kids in bed until 7:00 AM (which will inevitably fail by next weekend).
  7. Prepare Breakfast: Even though this means lunch will be served at 10:30 AM.
  8. Compose a Complaint to Toy Manufacturers: I’ll let them know that their toddler clock is ineffective—my little one figured out how to “bring the sun up” on day two! Now it can magically appear at 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, and 6:00 AM.
  9. Dream of Accomplishments: If only I weren’t so incredibly tired, the possibilities are endless.
  10. Nod Off Again: Rinse and repeat for the rest of the day.

Looking ahead, I know tomorrow will greet me at 6:00 AM once more.
