Relocating to Scottsdale, Arizona, five years ago due to my partner’s job was an adventure for our family. We spent countless hours discovering hidden gems around the area, and now our kids love sharing these spots with family and friends. Here’s a curated list of ten kid-friendly activities in Scottsdale that you won’t want to miss!

  1. Cosanti
Explore the enchanting grounds of Cosanti, the home of Paolo Soleri, a renowned American-Italian architect. This captivating location is situated in a picturesque part of Scottsdale, making it easy to park and wander. On our first visit, my daughter exclaimed it felt like a scene from a sci-fi movie, which was a delightful surprise! The garden paths are lovely, and if you’re lucky, you might witness the staff pouring bronze and ceramic wind bells, an experience that’s both educational and entertaining for the little ones. Best of all, entry is free!
  2. Scottsdale Trails
The city boasts numerous trails that are perfect for family hikes. The Gateway Trailhead and Lost Dog Trailhead are two excellent starting points, equipped with detailed maps, mile markers, and designated turnaround spots for a stress-free adventure with the kids.
  3. Butterfly Wonderland
This newly established attraction is the largest butterfly atrium in the United States. Kids will be enchanted as butterflies flit around, landing on them and filling the air with joy. After exploring the butterfly conservatory, check out the live ant colony and honey bee exhibit, plus a touch tank with stingrays. The staff has done a fantastic job ensuring it’s a kid-friendly environment!
  4. Sugar Bowl
Remember the cartoon “The Family Circus”? The Sugar Bowl was where artist Bill Keane drew many of those comics! Today, it’s a charming diner where you can indulge in delicious meals and ice cream, along with an arcade for some extra fun. It’s an ideal spot for an afternoon escape when the kids need a little excitement.
  5. Ollie the Trolley
Hop on Ollie the Trolley near Fashion Square for a delightful ride around the town. The kids love this charming way to explore Old Town, and I particularly enjoy the Downtown route, which takes you by the Waterfront and 5th Avenue.
  6. The Simple Farm
Run by local couple Mia and Jake, The Simple Farm opens its doors every Thursday morning for a community harvest experience. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy fresh coffee and homemade caramels while conversing with other visitors. They also offer workshops on various topics, including backyard gardening and canning.
  7. Desert Botanical Garden
A visit to the Desert Botanical Garden is a must! It’s fascinating to see local flora thriving in their natural environment. There are also many events throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar for family-friendly activities. My kids love exploring the paths and sharing their favorite cacti discoveries.
  8. Fountain Hills
Just a quick drive from Scottsdale, Fountain Hills is home to a stunning 560-foot fountain. The adjacent playground features splash pads that are perfect for little ones to cool off. Plus, there are plenty of nearby restaurants for refueling with pizza or ice cream.
  9. Musical Instrument Museum
If your kids are musically inclined, the Musical Instrument Museum is a treasure trove of sounds and sights. Their extensive collections are impressive, and you might even catch a live performance. Check their schedule for upcoming concerts!
  10. Splash Pads
Scattered throughout shopping centers, splash pads offer a fantastic way for kids to cool off and burn off some energy. Before moving to Arizona, I had never encountered such a fun concept! Some of my favorites include The Quarter, Kierland Commons, and Desert Ridge – perfect for those warm evenings.
