The Surprising Benefits of Cutting Blueberries into Quarters (from the perspective of a totally rational and educated mom)

As a parent, I’ve done some truly ridiculous things, but slicing a single blueberry into quarters might top the list. The other day, while preparing a snack for my 17-month-old son, I grabbed some organic blueberries from the fridge. I cut one in half, recalling a vague warning about blueberries being the same size as a toddler’s throat. Yes, I know that sounds utterly ludicrous, but that didn’t stop me from slicing away.

After cutting the blueberry into halves, I started to wonder if they were still too big. What if he tried to swallow them whole? So, naturally, I cut them again. That’s when the absurdity hit me, and I burst into laughter, much to my son’s delight. As I surveyed the minuscule pieces, I thought I’d better justify this madness with some rational reasons for cutting blueberries into quarters—reasons that have nothing to do with the fear of choking.

  1. It’s excellent practice for those future PB&J sandwiches that need to be cut just right.
  2. Other fruits get chopped up, and we wouldn’t want the blueberries to feel neglected or bullied by the melon, now would we?
  3. Cutting them exposes their secret green interior.
  4. Someday, you might need to perform delicate surgery on your child’s first pet fish, and blueberries make great practice patients.
  5. You wouldn’t want a half blueberry to pose a choking hazard for the dog when your toddler impulsively tosses it aside in a moment of toddler rage.
  6. Some blueberries might actually have fortunes hidden inside. (True story.)
  7. The Very Hungry Caterpillar could be lurking inside, and I can’t imagine anything more traumatic than my son accidentally biting into him.
  8. Tiny gnomes in the pantry might try to steal them for a game of soccer in the cereal box.
  9. Blueberry juice has been known to sharpen knives. (Again, true!)
  10. With two hands and two feet, let’s just say the math adds up!

Feel free to keep this list handy for your own blueberry-cutting escapades. You’re welcome!
