30 Indulgent Pleasures for Moms

Last night, I filled a ridiculously hot bath, grabbed a captivating novel and a glass of wine, applied a mud mask, and relished six glorious minutes of “Me Time” before a child shouted for me from the other end of the house. My husband was home, too, but my kids seem to think I’m some sort of magic eight ball, shaking my nerves until I reveal the answers to their whims.

“Sure, jump off the couch onto the dog!”
“Of course, you can eat all the ice cream!”
“Absolutely, binge-watch TV until your eyes are bloodshot!”

I don’t feel the slightest twinge of guilt when I find myself counting down the minutes until my little ones are tucked away for the night—upstairs, in their rooms, far from me. Why? Because once they drift off into slumber, I get a fleeting chance to unwind before diving back into cleaning and preparing for another day of prioritizing everyone else’s needs.

Just as they say, “This too shall pass,” I will savor these guilty pleasures of motherhood…

  1. Sipping on wine. (obviously)
  2. Devouring cake. (of course!)
  3. Ignoring housework for at least an hour.
  4. Indulging in trashy TV.
  5. Scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, or my 53 favorite mom blogs.
  6. Pampering myself with a mud mask.
  7. Staring blankly into the fridge for a few moments.
  8. Enjoying a solo trip to the bathroom.
  9. Going back for seconds at dinner.
  10. Googling random topics like, “Vasectomy,” “Summer crafts for toddlers,” or “Is it too late for Law School?”
  11. Painting my toenails a vibrant hue.
  12. Ditching my bra (and pants).
  13. Chatting with a friend.
  14. Writing just for me.
  15. Sneaking a spoonful of peanut butter with a sprinkle of chocolate chips.
  16. Soaking in a bath.
  17. Letting my hair down, free from little hands tugging at it.
  18. Cursing like a sailor.
  19. Venting to my partner about our children’s antics.
  20. Flipping through gossip magazines.
  21. Pinning diet trends, recipes, craft ideas, and mom humor on Pinterest.
  22. Shopping on Amazon.
  23. Removing batteries from noisy toys.
  24. Telling myself I’ll hit the hay before the 11 PM news.
  25. When that fails, giving myself a late-night pep talk for the next day.
  26. Briefly considering becoming vegan or doing yoga or volunteering.
  27. Researching newfound interests in vegan yoga and volunteer work online.
  28. Getting sidetracked by stylish stretchy pants that hide muffin tops.
  29. Allowing myself one more spoonful of peanut butter (or ice cream).
  30. Finally, going to bed.
