Leaving a Lasting Impression on Your Kids

When my daughter was deployed with the Air Force for a year, I braced myself for the emotional rollercoaster of missing her (cue the tears!). In a bid to ease my anxiety, she set me up on Skype before leaving so we could connect through video calls from time to time. While the quality wasn’t quite like the seamless broadcasts on TV shows, it was still a joy to see her cheerful face and hear her say, “Hey, Mom!” every few weeks.

Every time I got a call from Mia, my computer would chime like a tiny bell. Given the significant time difference between Oregon and her overseas location, these calls often came in the wee hours of the night. I became hyper-aware of that sound, honing my instincts like a mother hawk; I could hear it from any corner of the house, day or night.

One particularly sweltering summer evening, I was lounging in bed when that long-awaited bell chimed from down the hall. I leapt out of bed and sprinted to my computer. As I clicked the bright green “Answer Call” button, Mia’s smiling face appeared on the screen, followed by a startled shout: “OH MY GOSH, MOM!!! Are you NAKED?!?” It was then that I glanced down and realized, to my utter horror, that I was clad only in my husband’s boxers.

In a panic, I dove to the floor, taking out a chair in my haste, and crawled on my knees and one hand toward the closet to grab a t-shirt. Meanwhile, I was frantically waving my other arm in front of the computer, yelling, “Wait! Don’t hang up!!” Laughter erupted from Mia’s friends in the background as she shouted, “Mom! Hit the ‘AUDIO ONLY’ button! It’s on your left! AUDIO ONLY!!” “No, no, I’m here! DON’T HANG UP!” I kept shouting until I finally managed to pull on an oversized t-shirt, scrambling back to the screen, finally presentable for a video chat with my daughter.

Mia looked at me, deadpan, and said, “You know, when I come back, if anyone asks me what was the most traumatic thing I experienced while deployed, I’ll have to say ‘MY MOM.’” Clearly, it’s true that you’re never too old to leave a lasting impression on your children.
