Jenny Collins, a celebrated author, actress, and the hilarious voice behind the Twitter handle @jennyandteets, is the ultimate mom friend we all crave. You know, the kind who won’t bore you with endless stories about milestones or her latest healthy snack obsession. Instead, she’s the buddy who makes you feel better by sharing that she, too, relies on TV as a babysitter sometimes.
“Up until a couple of years ago, her life was all about excitement, spontaneity, and a bit of quirky charm,” her bio states. “Then came her son, Max, and everything changed overnight: she had to embrace responsibility, tame her wild hair, and start checking her voicemail.” Jenny shares parenting duties with her husband, actor Tom Hughes.
In a recent conversation, we dove into her candid thoughts on motherhood. Of course, we had to ask how she manages to snag those coveted eight hours of sleep.
Complete this thought: Motherhood is…
Jenny: An endless journey.
What’s your best advice for a new mom?
Jenny: Don’t stress about being “perfect.” Get that epidural! Breastfeed as long or as short as you wish. If your Mommy and Me class isn’t your vibe, ditch it. Get a haircut. Hit the gym again. Treat yourself to something nice, and remember to cuddle your dog.
What was your last “oh no” moment as a parent?
Jenny: Just yesterday, while I was playfully floating Max around the pool, he bit me. Instead of reacting calmly, I instinctively dunked him underwater. He was shocked, but I think I made my point.
With all the worries that come with parenting, what’s something not worth stressing over?
Jenny: I used to think I’d be really strict about screen time. Now, I actually enjoy it when he watches TV (second only to those sweet kisses).
How do you and your partner share the tougher aspects of parenting?
Jenny: It’s simple—convince your partner that all the enjoyable bits are a drag, and the harder tasks are their responsibility.
When was the last time you used parenthood as an excuse to avoid something?
Jenny: Honestly, I think I had kids just so I could get out of things I didn’t want to do.
What’s the minimum sleep you can function on?
Jenny: I need a solid 8 hours.
What’s the last treat you tried to keep from your child?
Jenny: A jar of Nutella.
What’s your drink of choice after a long day?
Jenny: Spicy tequila or maybe a bit of heroin.
Jenny’s latest book, Live Fast Die Hot, recently made it to the New York Times best-seller list. Kudos to Jenny!
