Imagine if, right after giving birth, a whimsical fairy appeared, carrying a beautifully wrapped box adorned with a large bow, the word “patience” elegantly inscribed on the card. She’d smile sweetly and say, “Here’s the extra boost you’ll need for this wild ride of parenthood. Good luck!” Then, with a twinkle in her eye, she’d vanish, leaving you with a profound sense of calm and tolerance. Wouldn’t that be lovely?

But in reality, giving birth doesn’t magically erase the part of your brain that can’t stand loud screaming or constant interruptions. The annoyance of a child pulling at your shirt doesn’t vanish simply because they are your adorable offspring. Those tiny fingers can only poke at your eyes so many times before you feel your stress levels rise.

No one prepares you for these truths. Nobody says, “Congratulations on your pregnancy! Just wait until you see how infuriating kids can be.” But let’s be honest: they can be a handful! It’s perfectly fine to acknowledge that, at times, even the most beautiful little angel can drive you up the wall. That adorable toddler who loves to explore your face with their tiny fingers while shouting, “Eyes! Nose! Mouth!” can quickly become overwhelming. Yes, it’s cute, but enough is enough!

As a parent, you’re required to summon an endless reservoir of patience, which might not even exist. Having a child trail behind you, attempting to nestle into your clothes, can be incredibly trying. And guess what? It doesn’t make you a bad parent. Maintaining some semblance of order while picking up after little ones is no easy feat. Parenting is hard work.

I have a friend, Angela, who often confesses her frustrations with her children. It’s like a support group for moms. Angela is not a yeller; she’s simply put so much pressure on herself that when she finally snaps, guilt washes over her. I don’t know any parent who hasn’t raised their voice once in a while, nor do I know one who doesn’t feel a pang of remorse afterward.

Interestingly, a study from SUNY and Clark University revealed that the sound of whining is one of the most irritating noises—more bothersome than nails on a chalkboard or sirens. Just think about the impact a whiny toddler can have on your day! Parenting can be exhausting, and kids are surprisingly repetitive. They constantly need your attention. If you’re at home with little ones and lack a partner to share the load, personal time is a luxury you won’t experience.

It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed at times. Needing a breather, whether it’s stepping outside for a moment or locking yourself in the bathroom for a few minutes of solitude, is not only okay—it’s essential. Remember, you didn’t undergo a lobotomy; you brought a baby into your life. Your brain is still as sensitive to overstimulation as it was before becoming a parent. If you’ve managed to get through the day, you’re doing an amazing job.
