Nearly 11 years ago, I welcomed my first child into the world. Just a few months before, in February 2004, Mark Zuckerberg introduced us to Facebook, a social media platform that has become an integral part of the motherhood experience. Over the years, Facebook has transformed into our digital scrapbook, where we announce pregnancies, share our bulging bellies, and document everything from toddler tantrums to teenage trials.

While Facebook has become a space for moms to connect, it’s clear that not all Facebook moms are the same. Much like the various parenting styles out there, moms have their unique ways of engaging on this platform. You can probably find yourself and your mom friends fitting into one or more of these categories:

  1. The Social Butterfly: This mom is a friend collector, boasting an impressive 782 friends. After meeting you at the park or a playdate, she sends a friend request your way before you can say “hello.” You might never interact again, but congratulations, you’ve just boosted her friend count!
  2. The Silent Observer: She’s the one who likes everyone’s posts, but you’ll quickly notice when you’ve annoyed her. This mom is the queen of passive-aggressiveness, scrolling past your updates without so much as a thumbs-up. Instead, she’s busy liking everyone else’s content while you’re left in the cold.
  3. The Overenthusiastic Liker: This mom is an all-out fan of the “like” button. In true Oprah fashion, she doles out thumbs-ups to everyone’s posts without much thought. While it’s nice to feel loved online, her rampant liking might make you question the sincerity of those praises.
  4. The TMI Queen: You know everything about this mom’s life, from her last leg shave to the latest drama with her in-laws. She shares daily snapshots of her kids and offers up candid selfies. While her authenticity is refreshing, sometimes you can’t help but cringe at the intimate details she spills.
  5. The Mommy Blogger: Steer clear of upsetting this mom, as you may find yourself featured in her next blog post! She’s on a mission to grow her audience and stay updated on viral trends within the mommy community. Though she’s constantly posting, she battles with Facebook’s algorithms, hoping her work reaches more than just a handful of followers.
  6. The Quiet Mom: You may have added her as a friend, but good luck getting her to engage. She tends to keep her life private and rarely posts updates. Maybe she’ll embrace social media when her kids hit their tweens, but for now, she’s keeping her child’s digital footprint pristine.
  7. The Grandma: This proud grandma has realized that Facebook is her best way to keep up with her grandkids. Now that she has more free time, she’s all in—liking, sharing, and commenting on her “beautiful little angels.” Just don’t try to hide anything from her; she’s not quite up to speed on privacy settings!

Indeed, Facebook has reshaped our parenting landscape, and like a group of teenage girls, we’re still figuring out the unwritten rules of social interactions and friendships. Thanks, Zuckerberg! As if motherhood wasn’t challenging enough.
