Yesterday was Leo’s seventh birthday, and it just so happened that he had a day off from school due to optional parent-teacher conferences (optional? No, thanks). In the afternoon, we celebrated Leo’s birthday at a pinball museum, surrounded by his friends. I jumped into play mode, engaging in flag football, catch, and happily hosting the festivities. Remarkably, I didn’t raise my voice once. My patience was nothing short of saintly. Twenty minutes to put on shoes? No worries, birthday boy!
Being Present
Whenever Leo needed me, I was there—fully present. No work calls, no TV as a distraction, no “just a minute’s,” and absolutely no compulsively checking emails. Just a dedicated mom, completely focused on him all day long.

As I tucked him in later, I asked if he had a good birthday. He replied with a beaming smile, “The best!” My heart swelled with joy.
Reflections on Parenting
You might think this experience taught me the value of unplugging and giving my children undivided attention. They deserve a warm breakfast and a mom who stays calm and focused on them. I certainly felt fulfilled, and the long evening spent catching up for the day I took off was worth every moment. It was all truly rewarding.
