Yesterday, while practicing yoga—a place where I often find my moments of clarity—I experienced a pivotal realization. Our instructor invited us to focus on someone who loves us without conditions and to dedicate our session to that individual. Naturally, my thoughts drifted to my children. Their love is boundless and fierce, offered freely without hesitation. Then she posed a thought-provoking question: Are we reciprocating that love? Do they truly know how much we cherish them?
This introspection is something I frequently ponder. I consider the legacy I’m crafting for my children, the memories of me that they will carry into adulthood, and the kind of role model I aspire to be. What will they remember about our time together? Am I embodying the values I wish to instill? Am I treating them with the kindness and respect I would like to receive?
As their mother and the primary decision-maker in our household, it’s easy to become engulfed in daily chores and responsibilities, losing sight of the precious moments we share. Time is fleeting, and soon they will be off carving their own paths. Each moment I have to influence them positively is diminishing, second by second.
Yes, I am the one responsible for their discipline, the one who ensures they learn accountability, and I am the one who enforces consequences, both good and bad. This responsibility can feel overwhelming at times. Yet, it is also a profound gift. I have the opportunity to shape their lives in ways that will resonate for years to come. What an incredible honor that is.
In the midst of my practice, I arrived at a powerful and joyous resolution: I will love my children each day as if it were our last together. Because, in truth, it is. The child they are today will not be the same tomorrow. This very moment with them is unique and irreplaceable; when they wake up, they will have changed.
Thus, I commit to leaving the best possible impression on my kids in every moment I can. This is how I will thrive as a single mother. I will approach each day as if it is the one that will define my legacy.
