Remember those endless nights spent trying to calm a fussy newborn? Or the days you resorted to bribing your toddler with candy just to get them to use the potty? We often vent about these less-than-glamorous aspects of motherhood, but honestly, the upcoming stages of parenting feel downright terrifying.
As my seven-year-old approaches the milestone of “graduating” from first grade, it suddenly feels like he’s on the fast track to middle school, crushes, and eventually, driving. When I pause to think about the tough and, yes, sometimes painful moments that lie ahead, I find myself appreciating (and dare I say enjoying?) these days when my biggest parenting worry is whether to let my kids endure yet another round of that insufferable show, “Bubble Guppies.” Here are the ten moments I dread the most:
- When my children inevitably ask if I ever dabbled in smoking, drinking, or any other rebellious activities, and I’m left to navigate the tightrope between honesty and white lies.
- The day I must change my son’s sheets as a teenager and stumble upon evidence of, well, let’s just say, “adult activities.”
- Having to broach “the talk” about the birds and the bees. My partner and I are both stuck with this duty, but let’s be real—moms always end up explaining the intricacies of menstruation and childbirth, while attempting to make it sound like a thrilling adventure.
- Hearing the words “I hate you!” when they sound all too sincere.
- Witnessing the first instance of one of my kids being bullied—whether it’s on social media, during recess, or by those notorious “mean girls.” It’s hard to believe this won’t happen, especially in today’s world.
- Living with a moody, dramatic teenage girl. There’s only room for one diva in this household, and that’s me. And yes, Mom and Dad, I recognize this is what you refer to as karma. Go ahead and chuckle.
- Realizing I’m no longer equipped to assist with my kids’ homework (hello, algebra!), which leads them to think they’ve outsmarted me.
- Establishing curfews and then anxiously waiting up, staring at the clock, until they finally come home. Thank goodness for texting. Remember having to make that dreaded late-night phone call to your parents?
- Just two words: driver’s permit.
- The moment I go from being “Mommy” to simply “Mom.”
