“Relax, everyone. They’re just words.”
How many times have we heard that phrase, especially in the aftermath of a controversial public statement? Recently, a politician’s boast about being able to kiss women without consent and “grab them by the private parts” due to his fame sparked outrage. Yet, some dismiss it with the claim that they were “just words.”
While it’s true that they were merely “words,” this perspective only diminishes their significance if you believe that language lacks power. The reality is that words are immensely impactful. They can shape thoughts, evoke emotions, and even alter lives.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” This childhood mantra has been used for generations as a defense against verbal bullying. However, scientific research—and the lived experiences of those who have faced bullying—reveals a stark truth: verbal abuse can inflict damage akin to physical harm. Words carry weight. They can build or destroy, heal or harm. They possess the potential to change lives for better or worse. Words can break hearts, ignite wars, inspire revolutions, and even manipulate beliefs. They shape our reality, both as individuals and as a society.
So, please don’t tell me that words are trivial. Don’t suggest that boasting about your ability to assault women contributes nothing to the culture of objectification. Don’t claim that dismissive remarks about infidelity shouldn’t factor into your character assessment. And certainly don’t imply that a recorded moment of candidness is merely “just words.”
There is no such thing as “just” words. There are only words—words with meaning, words with power, words that influence, and words that matter.
