10 Playground Guidelines for Parents: A Survival Guide

As a parent revisiting the world of childhood, I’ve discovered that some things are even more delightful than I remembered. Grilled cheese sandwiches? Absolutely divine now! Fireflies, rainbows, and sandcastles have also risen to the top of my enjoyment list—surpassing even my love for my kids at times! However, there are childhood joys that I dread as an adult, and the playground tops that list.

Sure, I appreciate the playground’s ability to help my children expend energy (much better than them bouncing off the walls at home), but my little ones somehow manage to turn every visit into a test of endurance. They want me to run around, join them on the swings, and tackle the slides. I thought the playground was a place for them to play while I sipped my coffee and caught up on my phone. What’s with the other parents who seem to be having endless fun with their kids? I just don’t get it!

So, as we continue to frequent these playgrounds, I’ve established some ground rules to clarify my stance. This way, I hope to make our visits as bearable as possible.

  1. I’m not pushing you on the swing for hours. If you want to swing, it’s time to learn how to pump those legs!
  2. I refuse to swing from the bars. I left my monkey days behind.
  3. Sliding down? Not happening. My fear of getting stuck mid-slide is all too real.
  4. Remember, we’re not playmates here. You have your friends, and I have mine at the playground.
  5. Stay far away from sandboxes. Those places are pure evil.
  6. Hide and seek? Not at home! Please don’t bring that to the playground.
  7. No need to shout “LOOK AT ME!!!” every few seconds. I’m (mostly) watching and will catch the next amazing feat.
  8. Please don’t ask me to do the see-saw. I don’t need reminding of my weight.
  9. Avoid anything that could lead to an ER visit. If that happens, we might not return.
  10. Do not tell me you’re bored. I can assure you, you’ll find home even more dull!
