The Ever-Present Arm Dangle

As mothers, our bodies have endured quite a journey. (And let’s not even start on those dreadful mesh hospital panties.) Fortunately, over time, we come to a point where we embrace our bodies. We engage in exercise to promote a healthy and joyful lifestyle.

Some of us prefer running.
Others opt for walking.
Many enjoy Pilates or Yoga.

We make an effort to limit junk food, even if we occasionally indulge in a BLT. We sign up for fitness classes and actually show up. We genuinely try! But what’s the deal with the Arm Dangle? Ah, yes, that all-too-familiar Arm Dangle. You know, that extra bit of flab on the inside of our arms? Just lift your arm, grab that flesh beneath, and give it a tug. (If you’re a fitness model or a pop star, you can skip this part—I’m not talking to you!)

At just 42, I never thought I’d be dealing with an Arm Dangle at this age. I envisioned myself at 88, arms wiggling in rhythm as I taught stretching classes to fellow seniors. I pictured my thin white hair and the other older ladies lifting their own jiggly arms alongside me.

Then, I stumbled upon a Facebook photo of myself and gasped, “Who is that woman with the enormous flabby arm? Seriously, whose arm is that? For the love of all things sacred, please tell me this picture is a joke!” Then came another picture, and yet another, revealing my pale flesh spilling out from under my sleeveless top like it was preparing to float away.

“Goodness, THAT’S ME!” I had to admit, I love food—always have, always will. Yet I also exercise regularly, and it used to work! Now, I wake up feeling bloated just from drinking too much water.

Can someone please explain what’s happening to my body? And why does this extra flab have to settle on such a noticeable (and irksome) area, especially when summer hits and cute sleeveless tops are finally on sale? Why is it that regardless of how hard we work out or how careful we are with our diets, the camera captures this specific part of our body in such an unflattering light? No matter how we try to crop the photo, those unsightly mounds of flesh seem to stretch indefinitely beyond the boundaries of our editing.

Let’s journey back 1,800 years. Picture me wandering through the wilderness with my baby swaddled in animal skins. The extra weight would have served a purpose then—after days of living on nothing but berries and bark, that body fat would come in handy.

But what good does it do me now? Recently, I embarked on a week-long toning routine, planking like a champ. I felt pretty proud until I caught another glimpse of my flabby companions in yet another photo.

After 42 years, I’ve finally come to understand why my grandmother insists on wearing a blouse over her tank tops. Does that imply the Arm Dangle is here to stay? I’m not sure, but I refuse to be confined by it. There are too many vibrant tank tops and sleeveless dresses in my closet waiting to be worn. I’m just not ready to wave goodbye to my Arm Dangle yet!
