Moms Have a Sixth Sense… And It’s Frustrating

Back in my teenage years, I had a bizarre dream that my ex-boyfriend penned me a love letter from Venezuela. I dashed to the mailbox the next morning, and to my astonishment, there was a letter from him! If that’s not proof of supernatural abilities, I don’t know what is.

Unfortunately, as I’ve grown older, I’ve realized I have absolutely no control over when these “powers” choose to show up. However, since becoming a mom, my knack for predicting the future has intensified. After chatting with fellow mothers, it appears that this is a common phenomenon among us. It seems every mom possesses a degree of foresight.

The Classic Drink-Spilling Scenario

Take, for instance, the classic drink-spilling scenario (and I’m sure this will resonate with many): One chaotic family dinner, I watched my son, Jake (age 6), bouncing in his chair like a squirrel that just found its hidden stash. He was clutching a drink, and I immediately had that sinking feeling: He’s definitely going to spill it.

I thought, “I need to intervene.” So, I warned him, “Jake, you’re going to spill your drink. Sit still and be careful.” Mission accomplished, right? Wrong. Within thirty seconds, his drink splattered across the table in a spectacular mess.

Sound familiar? I’ll admit, I have a tendency to say, “I told you so.” Not because I enjoy nagging, but because someone needs to highlight the wisdom I so generously share. If my family would just acknowledge my foresight with a simple, “Wow, you were right!” we might reach a point where I wouldn’t need to repeat myself. Probably.

So, after Jake’s epic spill, I put him in time-out (after he cleaned up, of course) and explained, “You’re not in trouble for spilling your drink. You’re in trouble for ignoring my warning.” I’m convinced that’s solid parenting!

The Dilemma of Predicting the Future

While Jake was in timeout, my husband, who is an engineer (basically a scientist), pointed out that I indeed have a talent for predicting the future. He also made an astute observation about the age-old question: “If we could foresee the future, could we change it?” Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no. Even with a glimpse of what’s to come, we can’t alter it.

So here we are, mothers with this incredible ability to predict impending chaos, yet it serves us little purpose. Knowing what’s about to happen and desperately trying to prevent it only amplifies our anxiety, leading to the very outcome we sought to avoid. I suspect that when I warned Jake about his wild movements, it only distracted him from the drink in his hand, making a spill even more likely. Profound, right?

Perhaps next time I see my child teetering with a drink, I should just keep quiet. But let’s be real—that’s not going to happen. I want a new superpower; this one is exhausting!
