I spotted you at the playground today, enjoying that beautiful weather with your little one. You were both perched on the merry-go-round, just sitting there—not spinning, but savoring the moment. You glanced at your older child, who was joyfully navigating the monkey bars while your focus remained on what appeared to be a 2-and-a-half-year-old. Your expression, though calm, was likely filled with endless to-do lists, grocery runs, plans for the day, and thoughts of future activities. You wiped your little one’s nose, handed her a snack and a drink, and then stared off into the distance, lost in thought.

As I observed this ordinary scene of motherhood on a regular afternoon, I felt an overwhelming urge to share a single piece of advice with you—if only I could approach you without seeming like a creepy observer. Here it is: Freeze this moment in time.

Take a breath and push aside the lists, the future, and the demands that invade your mind. Like the cobwebs that clutter a forgotten corner, clear your mind of all that noise, and let this moment shine in the forefront. Capture it in your memory bank, as if snapping a mental photograph right now.

Look closely at that toddler’s face. Notice the sweet curve of her rosy lips, the high-pitched giggles that erupt from her mouth, and the delicate strands of hair you just tucked behind her ears. Take in the tiny baby teeth that peek out as she pops a Cheerio into her mouth, and the chubby fingers gripping her sippy cup. Memorize her long eyelashes, round cheeks, and the way she gazes at you, as if you are her whole world—because you are.

Hold onto this moment of simplicity, giving it the highest priority it deserves. Because one day, this toddler will be discussing things like college applications and career choices, and while she talks, you’ll find yourself searching for that fleeting moment on the merry-go-round, reminiscing about the ordinary day when everything seemed perfectly simple.

Lately, I’ve been searching my own memories for those fleeting moments with my child—his cute chubby cheeks, his infectious laughter, and the tiny teeth that once filled his mouth. I long to remember the days of his soft blonde hair and silly one-word requests. But those memories slip away quickly, leaving me yearning for a clearer recollection.

I often wonder about my thoughts back then, during those simple times when we shared snacks on the merry-go-round. I don’t wish to return to those days (I’m well past the point of wanting another child), but I do wish I had preserved more of those ordinary moments in my heart. If only I had known then what truly mattered.

So, as I watch you enjoy this moment from afar, remember that it’s anything but ordinary. It’s extraordinary. Freeze it. Capture it in your mind and cherish it, for one day, you’ll wish you could revisit it.

In summary, take the time to appreciate and preserve the everyday moments. They may seem trivial today, but they are the memories you’ll treasure tomorrow.
