I often find myself reflecting on why I choose to share my thoughts online instead of keeping them tucked away in a personal journal, much like the ones we had in our youth. Eloise recently asked me, “Why blog instead of keeping a private diary?” It’s a question worth pondering, especially when I think about how sacred and secretive those diaries were. Locked tight, with keys worn around our necks, our innermost musings were hidden away, safe from prying eyes.
Today, however, my thoughts live on the internet for anyone to see. It’s a strange concept, but to be honest, I don’t lay bare my deepest secrets here. Those remain locked within me, safe and sound. My blog isn’t a diary—it’s simply a space for my thoughts.
Sometimes, though, I notice the blank pages in my childhood diaries and realize I don’t want you to look back at my blog and wonder why I was silent during certain times. Life was always happening, but sometimes I got busy or just didn’t have the words to express the tough moments.
So, dear kids, here are the reasons why I blog:
- To Capture Memories: I may never get around to creating elaborate scrapbooks or filling out baby books. Instead, this blog will serve as a time capsule of your childhood, filled with photographs and snippets of our lives together. You’ll find those on my hard drives—sorry about that!
- To Combat Loneliness: Motherhood can sometimes feel isolating, and writing helps me connect, even if it’s just with myself. It gives me a voice, even when no one is around to listen.
- To Connect with Others: The online world is filled with incredible people. Through blogging and social media, I’ve formed friendships that will last a lifetime.
- To Share My Story: I want you to know me as more than just your mom. I’m not the best at telling stories verbally, and I don’t want you to wake up in your 40s wondering about my life. By reading this, you’ll get a glimpse of who I am and the experiences that shaped me.
- To Preserve the Little Moments: Life is made up of tiny, beautiful memories. Sure, we’ll remember the big events, but I want to remember the small joys too—like when Max was trying to figure out how to play rock-paper-scissors with the cats.
- For a Broader Audience: Sometimes my jokes may fall flat at home, but perhaps someone out there will appreciate them. It’s worth sharing my humor with a larger community.
- Because I Love Writing: It brings me joy and keeps my mind active. I want to be able to write until the very end, crafting my thoughts right up until the last moment.
With love,
Mom
P.S. Consider starting a blog of your own. It might be one piece of advice you actually take to heart.
