For the past few weeks, I’ve been under the weather. My throat felt like sandpaper, my nose was as congested as a traffic jam, and my sinuses throbbed with discomfort. I’ve been hacking up some truly unappetizing green goo (sorry for the visual). With a son battling a strep and ear infection who insists on being up close and personal, it was only a matter of time before I caught something nasty. Last week, I finally started antibiotics for a sinus infection and have been gradually improving. Just in time for my husband, Jake, to come down with his own illness.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I adore Jake. I genuinely believe we’re meant for each other. My life would be incomplete without him; he’s my everything. But when he’s sick? I find myself daydreaming about escaping with the kids and leaving him to fend for himself. I mean, what choice do I have?
You’d think he was on his deathbed yesterday. Fifty years from now, if all goes well, I can only imagine his expression mirroring the one he wore throughout the weekend. “I’m so sick,” he lamented, barely dragging himself out of bed to make a trip to the Minute Clinic for a prescription and a heaping dose of sympathy. An hour later, he called me, sounding utterly defeated. “Did they give you anything?” I asked. “No,” he replied, in a voice that made me want to roll my eyes. “The strep test was negative, and she said it couldn’t be a sinus infection since it just started.”
“It’s just a cold,” I told him. “A man-cold.”
Someone send help. I’m not sure either of us will make it through the week.

In summary, my experience with Jake’s man cold has been a rollercoaster of sympathy and frustration. As I navigate this comedic yet exhausting phase of illness in our household, I’m reminded of the humorous challenges of parenting and partnership.
