You know how there are those language CDs that claim you can quickly and easily learn Spanish, French, or even Chinese? Well, where are the CDs for “Toddler Talk”?
You know exactly what I’m referring to—the words that leave you scratching your head, spoken by that newly chatty little human who once only cooed and smiled. Just the other day, my freshly two-year-old strolled up to me while I was washing dishes, pacifier firmly in mouth, and uttered what sounded like, “flubbity floshy boo.” We went back and forth for a minute, both of us in stitches, and I still had no clue what she meant. In the end, I just handed her a snack, and all was right in her world.
I know it’s not ideal to soothe kids with treats, but hey—cookies it is!
Now, don’t get me wrong. Most of the time, she articulates quite well, but there are still those moments of utter confusion. So, I thought it might be helpful to compile a list of words and phrases that should definitely be included on any future toddler translation CDs—if someone ever decides to make them!
- Oooce = Juice
- Moo = Milk (at least she’s got the association down!)
- Go Ide! = I want to go slide
- Wing Mama! = I want to swing, Mom
- Me it = I want to do it
- MINE! = Mine (this one relies heavily on inflection, and I might be in denial about its meaning)
- NOOOOOOOOOOO! = No (definitely tricky to translate in writing, but you get the picture)
- Ray Ray = Raisins
- Shooce = Shoes
- Brusheeth = Brush teeth
- Ahside = Outside
- Ownt no = I don’t know
- Flubbity Floshy Boo = I’m totally clueless (open to translation suggestions)
Honestly, I would pay a small fortune for CDs that taught this “language.” I’d even splurge for a special edition titled “With Pacifier Included.” Maybe I should just create them myself and cash in—after all, I bet many of you would be interested. Even if you don’t have toddlers, you probably know someone who could use a crash course in Toddlerish.

In summary, understanding your toddler’s unique language can be a hilarious yet challenging endeavor. While we may not have access to toddler language CDs just yet, the effort to decode their expressions is well worth it—especially when cookies are involved!
