I’m a Supermom (And So Are You)

Going out with my two-year-old triplets garners attention that rivals a circus parade or a flash mob. I often hear the familiar phrase, “You’ve got your hands full,” and I’m frequently labeled as Supermom. While I appreciate the sentiment, I must admit it makes me a bit uneasy. When curious souls ask, “How do you manage it all?” my honest reply is, “Just like you do — you keep going.”

It’s true. Whether you have one child or five, whether they’re individual or multiples, every dirty diaper gets changed, every empty cup is filled with milk, and every boo-boo gets a kiss. Laundry might not always get folded (wrinkles are part of life), but dinner makes it to the table. By some miracle, we navigate through the day with a full house and (sometimes) an empty sink.

I often meet fellow moms who downplay their own experiences, convinced their daily challenges can’t compare to the chaos in my life. “I just have one, and it’s tough!” they say, or “I have three, but they’re not all the same age!” They assume I must possess some sort of superhuman strength or a secret method to maintain my sanity. Surely, a regular human couldn’t juggle such feats of motherhood.

While I usually reject this notion of superpowers, let’s start a new trend. Picture me dramatically tearing open my shirt to reveal an “S” splashed across my tank top — yes, the one I wear to keep my twin skin from spilling over my mom jeans. You caught me; I’m Supermom.

You’re “just” a working mother with a newborn, surviving four nightly feedings before rushing off to your job. You somehow function on a mere twelve minutes of sleep and a cold slice of toast. Yet, you still manage to apply lipstick and wear matching shoes. You operate in a daze, yet you’re effective at work, only to return home and do it all over again. What does that make you? Supermom!

You’re “just” pregnant with your second child while caring for your first. All you want is to hurl, sleep, or hurl yourself into sleep. But your little one needs you, and breakfast must be served — you somehow keep it down while dealing with a blowout of epic proportions. If that doesn’t qualify you as Supermom, I don’t know what does.

You’re “just” a mom with two kids under two, managing a wobbly infant and an energetic toddler. How on earth do you keep one from climbing the dining table while ensuring the other stays fed? You’re working wonders, and you deserve the Supermom title.

You’re “just” a stay-at-home mom like me, except you’re leaping over baby gates with a toddler in tow, chasing after your kindergartener who forgot her lunch, while your three-year-old decorates the dog with a permanent marker. You accomplish more housework by noon than most do in a week, and naps are a luxury you can’t afford. All in a day’s work for Supermom!

You’re “just” the mom of older kids, juggling laundry and meals, but now you’re also dealing with car insurance and college tuition. Your heart seems to be in multiple places at once. Do your kids realize how much you worry? Probably not, as they live their lives carefree, thanks to Supermom.

Every mother embodies Supermom. There’s no hierarchy of difficulty. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live; whether you’re me or the mother down the street with her two rambunctious boys, you should wear your “S” with pride. Shout it loud: “I’m Supermom!” Because you absolutely are.
