20 Essential Skills for Our Ideal Babysitter

I’ve yet to hire a babysitter. Most of the time, I resort to my mother-in-law, who graciously takes my kids for a few hours, allowing my husband and me a rare night out. However, the grandparents’ house tends to unleash a wild side in my children, so I’m on the hunt for a reliable babysitter.

It’s time to have a superhero on speed dial—someone who can responsibly care for my kids (and our home) when we need a break. If I were to put out an ad, it might read something like this:

WANTED: On-Demand Babysitter

Stay-at-home mom of two energetic children under five seeks a versatile childcare expert. Must have a dependable vehicle and be comfortable navigating the most treacherous back roads imaginable. A sunny disposition and adaptable personality are essential. Salary to be discussed based on experience.

Must-Have Skills:

  1. Ability to withstand a playful punch (or a surprise Kung-Fu kick).
  2. Proficiency in juggling—bonus points for chainsaws and fireballs.
  3. Fluent in Whine-ese, Sass-Speak, and Mom-Voice.
  4. Capable of executing the legendary Evil Mom Glare.
  5. Willingness to referee epic games of tag, superhero leaps off the couch, and wild rodeo antics involving the family dog.
  6. Comfort with bending the truth to encourage healthy habits (you’ll shrink if you don’t eat your veggies!).
  7. Must have the speed of a cheetah or the ability to fly (or at least run really fast).
  8. Can burp the alphabet on command—because why not?
  9. Skilled in communicating in rhymes or adopting a high-pitched voice that sends the dog scurrying for cover.
  10. Remain composed after hearing the same question 53 times in a row.
  11. Endure repeated screenings of Frozen—earplugs are available next to the stash of wine (which is strictly off-limits).
  12. Form a solid friendship with beloved yet slightly annoying characters like Elmo or Peppa Pig.
  13. Strong upper body strength is a must; you’ll often find yourself carrying two little climbers.
  14. Able to laugh off toddler antics and maintain a straight face when a four-year-old boasts about their impressive poop.
  15. Handle multiple check-in calls without losing your cool, especially when my mother-in-law decides to chat for 30 minutes.
  16. Breath should be free of onion odors.
  17. Must not be offended by farting contests.
  18. Capable of reading the same children’s book repeatedly without going numb.
  19. Open to working evenings and weekends.
  20. Willing to tolerate my last-minute jitters, which may delay my departure by an extra 45 minutes.

This list seems perfectly reasonable, right? What would you add to yours?
