This past Mother’s Day was decent, if not a bit enjoyable. I volunteer at my church on the second Sunday of each month, watching energetic little ones aged three to six, which meant I had to be there bright and early at 9 AM. Afterward, our family enjoyed a lovely picnic and a short hike at a nearby winery, and the weather was nothing short of perfect. I even managed to squeeze in a load of laundry and prepare salads for both myself and my mom before heading out.
However, as I scrolled through Facebook later that day, I was met with a barrage of friends showcasing extravagant Mother’s Day festivities. While they reveled in weekend-long celebrations of motherhood, I found myself sharing just half a day with my own mom, and frustration bubbled up inside me.
I already spend my days sharing everything from my bed to my meals and even my bathroom time with my kids. Surely, I deserve a full day dedicated solely to me, right? But then again, I have my own mother to consider.
Many of my friends have lost their mothers, while others have moms who live far away or simply choose not to spend time with them and their children. I feel immensely grateful for my own mom and believe she deserves recognition, too. But wouldn’t it be nice if we each had a special day just for ourselves? Especially while I’m still in the throes of parenting little ones.
Interestingly, I found out that Grandparents Day falls on September 7 this year. I had to look it up, as I knew it existed but couldn’t recall when. Established by Congress in 1978, Grandparents Day definitely deserves more attention.
This August, I’ve decided to collaborate with my kids’ schools to make crafts for Grandparents Day. The school year will still be fresh, and the kids will be eager to participate, especially without the recent stress of Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week hanging over their heads.
And for next year, I plan to adjust my church volunteering schedule so I can avoid working on Mother’s Day—the one day that should truly be about me!
So, fellow moms, are you on board with this plan?
In conclusion, taking the time to celebrate Grandparents Day can not only strengthen family bonds but also allow mothers to enjoy their own special moments. Balancing the needs of our children and our parents can be tricky, but embracing these occasions can bring joy to everyone involved.
