Understanding THAT Kid

You know THAT kid, right? The one who seems far too old to be throwing a fit in the towel aisle at Target. The one who hurls mulch at others on the playground, again and again. The one who can’t resist using way too many “potty words.” The one who just pushes boundaries a little too far. The one who is wailing at the top of his lungs in a restaurant. The one who reacts with aggression when a stranger simply says, “Hello!” The one you advise your kids to steer clear of, fearing that his behavior might influence them.

But do you really know THAT kid?

You may not realize the countless hours his mother has spent in waiting rooms, consulting pediatric therapists, researching dietary options, and diving into behavior modification literature. You probably don’t know that his father has sacrificed days at work, given years of sponge baths, and mastered the art of the ‘squeezy hug’ to calm him down. You aren’t aware of the pride that swells when he greets his therapist with a warm hug, followed by the heartache when he lashes out moments later. You don’t see the pain of watching him miss out on birthday parties, Disney rides, play dates, story times, and movie nights because he “can’t make it stop”—whatever “it” may be at the time.

You might not know that this child was once the most laid-back, cheerful baby until a virus at just seven weeks old seemed to alter his entire demeanor. You might not see how he would prefer to snuggle in a chair all day, wrapped in his favorite blanket, if he didn’t have to face the challenges of the world around him. You probably don’t know that he is the first to notice when an animal is scared and the first to offer his beloved blanket to comfort it. You might not be aware of how gentle he is with infants, noticing every tiny detail about them. You may not know that he starts each day by asking his mom how she slept the night before. You might not realize that he willingly shares his treats, not even asking for a single bite in return. You might not know that he has a passion for cooking, with breakfast being his specialty. You might not know that he feels out of place in this world but lacks the tools to change that.

The Depth of a Parent’s Love

You don’t know the depth of love a parent can hold for their child.

I know all of this because THAT kid is my son. And never forget it.
