After sharing my popular article, “The 10 Tough Aspects of Pregnancy,” a longtime friend, Tom Richards, felt inspired to write his own take on the subject: “The Top 10 Challenges of Being Married to a Pregnant Woman.” I even asked my husband, but he wisely avoided that landmine, especially since he was currently dealing with a very emotional pregnant wife who once cried over a spilled smoothie. Ahem. Pregnancy can be quite the rollercoaster.
Since Tom bravely stepped up to share his thoughts on the trials of enduring pregnancy alongside a woman, I thought it was only fair to provide him a platform. It seems he’s still feeling the effects because, even after a few years, he could easily recall all the tricky moments from that time. Brace yourselves, ladies…
- Extreme Mood Swings
You might be surprised to find that the lovely woman you married has transformed into a whirlwind of emotions. During her pregnancy, she can go from sweet to furious faster than you can say “hormones.” I remember one night during our first pregnancy, my wife asked me to vacuum the living room. I got distracted and didn’t do it right away. By Sunday, I was settled in front of the TV, and when she reminded me again, a storm brewed. She picked up the vacuum and hurled it across the room while shouting, “VACUUM THE DARN CARPET!!!” I was left in shock, wondering how I ended up dodging a vacuum cleaner. - Enrollment in Breastfeeding Classes
Like many soon-to-be dads, I found myself roped into a breastfeeding workshop one fall Saturday during college football season. Sure, I appreciate the beauty of breasts, but an 8-hour lecture on something I won’t even use? One dad was even asking for advice on how to soothe his wife’s sore nipples. - Compliments Gone Wrong
When your wife expresses insecurity about her body, it’s best to keep quiet. Any attempt at praise will be misinterpreted and may lead to a showdown. And if she asks, “Do I look as pregnant as her?” in the mall, just run. Trust me; it’s less painful than engaging. - Baby Showers
Attending a baby shower is like being sentenced to a party with strangers where you’re forced to smile at gifts you couldn’t care less about—all while there’s no alcohol to ease the pain. By the time the third kid came along, my enthusiasm for these events was on par with a trip to the dentist. - Doctor Visits
While it’s a necessary duty, sitting in a waiting room filled with pregnant women made me feel out of place. After waiting an hour, the doctor spends five minutes confirming everything’s normal, and just like that, my insurance gets billed for a full appointment. - Choosing a Name
Seriously? Why can’t the government just assign names? You spend countless hours trying to pick a name for this little person who will eventually tell you that you don’t know anything. For example, we named our youngest Andrew Dalton, but I always called him AD. His friends even know him as AD! - Odd Food Cravings
While pregnant, it’s totally acceptable to crave strange combinations like pickles and ice cream, but that doesn’t mean your spouse wants to join you. If you find our double-cheese burger revolting, please keep it to yourself! - Intimacy Issues
Let’s be honest; this one is awkward. No matter how much love you share, the thought of being intimate while a baby is so close can feel a bit strange. As more children arrive, intimacy often takes a backseat to family priorities. - The Boob Show
On the bright side, pregnancy means you get to see a sneak peek of your wife’s voluptuous assets, but the downside is that they’re off-limits. Why are they so sensitive when they look so good? And then they shrink back down after the baby arrives. - Night Terrors
Many pregnant women experience nightmares, and mine was no exception. I’d be jolted awake by her blood-curdling screams at 3 AM, only to be chastised for disturbing her sleep. Just roll over and pretend you didn’t hear anything!
So there you have it, expectant mothers. Now you know what your partner is really thinking behind that nervous smile during your pregnancy journey. Feel like tossing a vacuum cleaner at someone? Take it out on him. Tom is currently hiding.
