When both your mother and your caregiver suggest that you and your partner take a night off from parenting and escape to a hotel, what do you do? You dash.
You sprint to your mom’s place so quickly that you forget essential items like diapers and wipes for your son. You race so fast that you pack long-sleeved pajamas for your daughter, completely overlooking the fact that a) her arm is in a cast and b) it’s hotter than a sauna. In your haste, you even neglect to grab any makeup, so out of practice you are with it. You barely manage to leave any guidelines for taking care of the dog. You’re practically leaving a trail of dust behind as you flee.
You indulge in a delightful dinner, experience the best sleep you’ve had in ages, and engage in genuine conversation. But soon enough, you find yourself rushing back home to your children because they are your world. You realize you don’t feel complete without them.
And then, as you catch your breath, you remember exactly why a break was necessary.
