11 Must-Have Essentials in My Daily Grooming Routine (In Response to Jamie Carter)

In a recent article, my colleague Jamie Carter shared her top 10 beauty must-haves, which inspired me to take a closer look at my own grooming routine. As a man, I found it enlightening and decided to craft an homage to the products that define my daily regimen. Initially, I thought I could keep it to just two essentials. But, naturally, I needed to one-up that, so here are my 11 crucial items!

  1. Head & Shoulders
I’ve often wondered if I’d still deal with dandruff if I stopped using this shampoo. However, I’m not keen on testing that theory. Maybe we can persuade someone like Grant Stoddard to give it a go instead.
  2. Irish Spring
My wife and I had a romantic journey that included an 18-year break before we tied the knot. During our first round of dating, Irish Spring soap was my go-to. When we reunited, she picked it up again, thinking it was my favorite. Now, it’s back in my daily routine.
  3. Nail Clippers
Two grooming tasks make me feel utterly unsettled: needing a haircut and letting my nails grow too long. Unfortunately, I tend to misplace nail clippers regularly, but luckily, I can grab a new pair for just 99 cents at CVS—though only if I snag the ones at the checkout. The ones in the nail care aisle, identical in every way, are often 2-3 times the price.
  4. Salicylic Acid
In my youthful naiveté, I believed I’d outgrow acne by my 40s. Well, that hasn’t happened, but thankfully, this over-the-counter miracle keeps it under control. I usually stick to the drugstore brand.
  5. My Hands
Did you know that every barber I visit comments on my thick, fast-growing hair? It’s true! Thankfully, I’ve learned to spend a mere 15 seconds each morning to tame it a bit with just my fingers, rather than struggling with brushes or combs.
  6. Budget Razors
I’m all about those inexpensive disposable razors. I use them a few times before tossing them, which feels more efficient than splurging on pricier options that I’d likely discard just as quickly. I’ve considered switching to a straight razor, but that’s still on the back burner.
  7. $4 Shower Mirror
A fog-free mirror is essential for my shower shaving routine. A simple suction cup mirror does the trick perfectly.
  8. Brut (and sometimes Old Spice)
Want to gauge how old-school I am? Check my deodorant! I’ve been loyal to the same brand since my high school days, which feels like a lifetime ago.
  9. Old Spice All-in-One
Every now and then, especially while traveling, I might indulge in this all-in-one product that serves as both body wash and shampoo. I think it could also double as a dessert topping—who knows?
  10. Hair Product
Honestly, I can’t recall the name of my favorite hair product, which is likely why I end up trying different brands every time. With my thick hair, I need something to keep it somewhat manageable. I suspect the ingredients include a mix of glue and who knows what else.
  11. Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer
As I age, I’m confronted with the unwelcome growth of hair in my nose and ears. A trusty trimmer is a must, along with a steady supply of AAA batteries.
