What’s a skill you wish to acquire?
I want to learn how to play the guitar. My father gifted me his old one, the same one he used during my childhood, when I turned 30. I’m not very good yet, but I refuse to give up! -
What’s a trip you’ve been longing to embark on?
My husband and I absolutely need to visit France. It’s a must-do, and time is of the essence! -
Who deserves a thank-you note from you?
That would be my high school German teacher, Clara Jenkins. Tragically, she passed away from breast cancer a few years ago. While I might have found her annoying back then, she genuinely instilled confidence in me and made me believe in my worth. -
What were you up to on a typical Friday night at 12 years old?
I was probably trying on fancy dresses that had been handed down from my older cousin. I’d pretend to be a celebrity like Alyssa Milano or Brooke Shields, wearing bras that were far too large for me, stuffed to the brim. All while munching on Doritos and Ding Dongs. -
Who was the recipient of your first mix tape?
Honestly, I can’t remember his name, but I think it was Jake. I do recall that I included “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder and several hits from New Edition, like “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Cool It Now.” My mix tape skills evolved over time, thankfully! -
Which childhood story do you wish would stop being told at family gatherings?
For some reason, everyone loves to bring up the time I stuck a bean up my nose. I kept it a secret until I sneezed it out later—sprouted! Not embarrassing at all, right? -
What advice would you give to your 25-year-old self?
Seek help for your bipolar disorder. It doesn’t mean you’re destined to repeat your mother’s path. Addressing it will greatly enhance your quality of life. Stop dodging that diagnosis! -
What’s your specialty in the kitchen?
Cake! I’m a cake aficionado. No one does it better than me! -
What’s your guiding principle?
It varies by the day, but I often think, “Don’t forget to be AWESOME!” Or, I might channel Gandhi with, “Be the change you want to see.” -
If you don’t have a motto, what’s your theme song?
I love James Taylor’s “Secret of Life”: “Enjoy the passage of time.” -
Which movie or TV show lifts your spirits?
“Love Actually” always restores my faith in humanity.
