A Sign of Unity
In a society where divisive rhetoric continues to proliferate, I want to make it clear that I stand as an ally to marginalized communities.
Recently, I’ve been asked about the meaning behind the tattoo I received this week. Instead of responding individually, I thought it would be more effective to share my thoughts here.
As many may know, following the Brexit vote, the UK experienced a disturbing rise in xenophobic attacks against minorities. In response, the safety pin emerged as a symbol of solidarity—a way for individuals to signal, “I am a safe person.”
The origins of this symbol, however, are steeped in history. During World War II, the Dutch displayed safety pins discreetly to show support for those being persecuted by the Nazis. Similarly, Norwegians used paper clips to communicate safety to others during those dark times. These small acts of defiance often came with significant risk, as the consequences of such displays could be dire.
Today in America, there is a renewed interest in the safety pin, especially in light of the current political climate characterized by rising nationalism, inflammatory language targeting minorities, and increased Islamophobia.
Some may dismiss the pin as trivial or insufficient. There are even reports of individuals with extremist views attempting to appropriate the symbol to mislead others about their intentions. However, I believe it serves an essential purpose. It reminds us of the importance of unity and the need to identify allies during challenging times. It reinforces my commitment to advocate for those whose freedoms and safety are under threat. I will not remain silent in the face of injustice.
Alongside the safety pin, my tattoo features a lightning bolt, inspired by the beloved Harry Potter series. As many fans know, Harry bears a lightning bolt scar from an attempt on his life by Voldemort. This scar symbolizes survival, made possible by the love and protection of his parents.
The recent election has illuminated the presence of individuals—referred to as Death Eaters in the series—who harbor racist, misogynistic, or ethnocentric beliefs within our society. While voting for a particular candidate does not inherently make someone a Death Eater, it does reflect complicity in these issues. Since the election, I’ve witnessed a troubling rise in hate crimes, and I want to make it clear that such ideologies have no place in my life.
The lightning bolt also signifies my intention to choose my associations with care. I encourage others to do the same.

Summary
My safety pin tattoo symbolizes solidarity with marginalized groups and serves as a reminder of the importance of allyship during dark times. It embodies my commitment to stand against injustice and to choose my associations wisely. The accompanying lightning bolt reflects resilience and the necessity of protection rooted in love.
