It Was Once So Passionate, Until We Became Parents

In the early days of our marriage, intimacy was a nightly ritual filled with excitement and passion. I often reminisce about those evenings, relishing each moment we spent together, free from distractions. We took our time, exploring each other’s company without a care in the world. If we felt the need for more, we indulged ourselves repeatedly until we were completely satisfied. We sought out new locations — the kitchen counter, the living room sofa, the bedroom, and occasionally the patio.

But everything changed once we had children, and mealtime transformed forever.

Before embarking on the journey of parenthood, you receive numerous warnings about the challenges that lie ahead. However, no one mentions that you might not enjoy a hot meal for roughly a decade. (Perhaps six years if you have one child, but let’s be realistic here.)

You can spend hours preparing a gourmet meal or simply serve up frozen chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. Regardless, you’ll find yourself engaged in a lengthy process before you can even take your first bite, so by the time you finally sit down, everything is cold and unappetizing.

First, you must serve everyone else’s portions. If you have more than one child, this can be time-consuming. Toddlers will require specific plates and utensils (“Noooo! The blue plate!”) and drinks that will lead to endless debates (“I want juice! No, milk! No, in the dinosaur cup!”). If your children are picky eaters, you’ll need extra time to remove any “yucky” bits like onions or carrots or at least disguise them.

As a responsible parent, you’ll spend additional moments ensuring that everything on the plate is cut into non-choking-sized pieces. If there’s meat involved, you may even find yourself obsessively making sure the pieces are uniformly sized (not that I would know anything about that).

Ironically, you’ll then have to blow on the food until you’re nearly out of breath because everything is “too hot.”

No sooner do you finally sit down with your own fork than someone spills their drink. They might have had a mere four ounces of juice, but it will magically transform into a lake on the table, requiring an entire roll of paper towels to clean up. This will remind you that you forgot to hand out napkins, which are now an absolute necessity.

Someone will drop their spoon and need a new one because the dog licked it. Unfortunately, all the clean spoons seem to have disappeared into some unknown realm, so you’ll need to wash one — or at least rinse off the dog slobber. Or you might just wipe it on your shirt; I’m not here to judge.

Then, someone will ask for salt and/or pepper, and after a couple of minutes, they will demand a new portion because there’s “too much” seasoning. One child will remind you, rather indignantly, that you forgot to give out the gummy vitamins. And amidst all this chaos, someone will finish their meal and request seconds — forcing you to start all over again.

Dining out can slightly improve your chances of enjoying a warm meal, but it still involves cutting and blowing. Plus, you’ll likely end up spending a small fortune on a kids’ meal just for your child to eat two fries and pick the batter off their corn dog.

Eventually, your kids will grow up, and you might hope for a more relaxed mealtime experience again — that is, until they become involved in evening sports practices, after-school clubs, and spontaneous visits from friends, and you find yourself consuming food in haste.

In the meantime, my best advice is to invest in a good microwave. Trust me, it’ll be one of the best decisions you make. Summary

The transition from a carefree, passionate relationship to the chaotic world of parenthood dramatically alters mealtime experiences. Parents often find themselves juggling the needs of their children, leading to cold meals and endless interruptions. While the hope for leisurely dinners may seem distant, investing in a good microwave can make life a bit easier. Resources for prospective parents exploring insemination options are available through various channels.
