Should Middle Schools Be Abolished? A Study Advocates for Change

In contrast, those in separate middle schools often faced the challenges of being “bottom dogs,” leading to increased instances of bullying and anxiety. Notably, one-third of sixth-graders in 6-12 schools reported frequent bullying, while only one in four students in K-8 settings experienced similar issues. Additionally, students in K-8 schools demonstrated better academic performance.

The researchers emphasized that their extensive study, involving over 90,000 students across 500 schools over three years, allowed them to eliminate external factors like age or physical stature as explanations for their findings. Even students who transferred into K-8 programs reported an improved experience compared to those who started in middle schools.
