Parenting Resolutions for the New School Year

As a pediatric occupational therapist, I understand that children learn through observation and interaction. Having shared this insight with many parents and educators, I often question whether I embody the advice I give. As a mother of three kids aged 6 to 8, I strive to practice what I preach, but the demands of work, family, and personal commitments can feel overwhelming.

As the new school year approaches, I feel the need for a reset. Therefore, I’ve created a list of “Parenting Resolutions” to implement now, even though it isn’t the New Year or any recognized holiday. I hope these resolutions resonate with fellow parents, caregivers, educators, and therapists. I will place this list on my refrigerator as a daily reminder to practice mindfulness in my parenting.

To my children, I commit to:

  1. Refraining from social media, texting, or emailing during our dedicated time together. Our focus will be on play.
  2. Taking a moment to breathe in calmness and breathe out stress after work, welcoming you with a smile. I understand you’ve had a long day as well.
  3. Actively participating in our outdoor adventures, whether it’s climbing to the top of the slide or swinging alongside you.
  4. Making a conscious effort not to express that I’m too busy. I will always prioritize our time together.
  5. Organizing a dance party at least once a week, as a fun, shared experience.
  6. Striving to attend your plays, graduations, and celebrations, despite my work commitments. You are my priority.
  7. Acknowledging my mistakes by looking you in the eyes and apologizing sincerely, demonstrating my remorse through my actions.
  8. Expressing my love for you daily and sharing the many reasons why you are cherished.
  9. Taking time to appreciate every smile, laugh, and even the challenging moments, recognizing how quickly you are growing.
  10. Ensuring that each of you starts and ends the day with the knowledge that you are special, cherished, and loved beyond measure.

These resolutions serve as a reminder that, amidst the chaos of life, nurturing our relationships with our children is paramount. For those interested in exploring family planning options, consider checking out resources like Women’s Health for insights into infertility, or explore Cryobaby’s home insemination kit and the BabyMaker home intracervical insemination syringe kit combo for assistance.

In summary, I encourage all parents to reflect on their parenting practices at the start of this school year. It’s essential to create a nurturing environment where children feel loved and valued, while also acknowledging the challenges of balancing work and family life.
