Rescue Me, Educators — You’re My Sole Salvation

The summer months can feel endless, especially when you have children at home. Why isn’t school in session year-round?

For the past fortnight, I’ve been working remotely while my 5-year-old and 6-month-old engage in a chaotic mix of play, mischief, and the inevitable frustrations that come with parenting. We’ve ventured out a bit, which is hardly a picnic with little ones, and have debated the summer camp dilemma for a semblance of relief, although that comes with its own set of challenges.

The absence of routine during a summer void of camp or school is detrimental to both children and parents alike, particularly those who occasionally need uninterrupted time to accomplish tasks. It’s nearly impossible to focus on anything with kids demanding attention—whether it’s using the bathroom, making calls, enjoying a meal, or simply sitting alone in a corner, overwhelmed.

Managing children can be a Herculean task. Keeping them entertained, especially a 5-year-old, is no small feat—often leading to guilt trips (like a Marvel movie binge that stretches on for weeks because, honestly, there are just so many now) or a hefty financial burden (the dreaded summer camp). I genuinely admire teachers for their ability to manage this chaos.

After just a week navigating this whirlwind, my appreciation for educators has skyrocketed—an understatement at best. I’m prepared to craft my son’s next teacher a cheese sculpture when I drop him off for school this fall. I’d gladly devour that sculpture if she requests, just as long as she takes my child for eight hours a day over the next nine months.

Educators are individuals we all know, whether from our own schooling experiences or through friends and family. My sister, Lisa, is a teacher, and while she possesses remarkable patience, I often wonder how she manages to inspire and teach other people’s children daily. It seems as if she must be imbued with some special patience-giving powers, as I can barely handle my own kids most of the time, even on better days.

Teachers are, without a doubt, superheroes. I would feel this way even if their only role was to supervise my kids while they watched TV for 180 days a year, as long as they were keeping them occupied. But they do so much more than that.

In the early years, they help nurture our children, engaging them in play and reading. As kids grow, educators mentor them, fostering both academic knowledge and social skills. They motivate, discipline, and guide children through critical learning experiences.

True, some educators may exhibit cynicism or weariness, but such attitudes exist in every profession. Yet, it’s remarkable that more don’t succumb to such feelings. We all remember that one exceptional teacher who inspired us or helped shape our lives. Each educator deserves recognition, even those who may seem indifferent.

If you wish to homeschool your children, that is completely your choice. However, I prefer to entrust my kids to those who have committed their lives to educating and caring for children.

Thank goodness for teachers.
