Money is a universal desire; we all hope for more of it. However, the common advice that eliminating a daily latte will lead to financial success overlooks the larger picture. If I had the chance to reverse some of the numerous unwise spending decisions I’ve made as an adult, I might well be a millionaire today. Below is a compilation of my financial missteps over the years:
- Purchasing jeans in a size smaller than I currently wear, hoping to motivate myself to lose baby weight. Years later, with three children, the tags remain untouched. It may be time to donate them.
- The extravagant ball gown I bought during a sample sale, convinced I would need it someday. I’ve worn it exactly zero times.
- Those concert tickets to see Ja Rule were a poor investment; that $40 could have been better allocated.
- Ordering a shrimp quesadilla from a diner in a landlocked area was a regrettable choice; a bit of foresight would have helped.
- A DVD of “Spanglish” from a discount bin at Blockbuster was not the bargain I thought it was.
- Mini cheesecake pans purchased with the intention of frequent baking only served to clutter my kitchen.
- A bulk bag of chia seeds from Costco, prompted by the allure of trying something new, was a questionable decision.
- An impulse buy of lime green sparkly eye shadow needs no further explanation.
- The expensive vacation to Aruba, complete with an overpriced horseback riding tour, was not worth the cost.
- Suspenders that I thought would be stylish were a fashion misstep.
- A “nerd-chic” My Little Pony sweatshirt that I mistakenly thought I could pull off proved otherwise.
- The faulty IKEA Tupperware set that led me to buy a second one, thinking the first was defective.
- An at-home bikini wax kit, which quickly taught me that some things are best left to professionals.
- The Avril Lavigne CD, while edgy at the time, is a relic I regret purchasing.
- Craft supplies for an Etsy store that never materialized; my ambition exceeded my follow-through.
- Rosetta Stone software for learning Spanish, which I abandoned after the first disc.
- A white bikini, impractical for vacations with family, was a poor choice.
- The $12.50 I spent on a disappointing movie was time and money wasted.
- Tacos from a vegan taqueria left an unpleasant taste, one I’ll not soon forget.
- A $60 haircut from a stylist still in training didn’t yield the results I hoped for.
- The label maker that promised organization still sits in its packaging, collecting dust.
- A boutique modern art museum visit that featured only four pieces was a letdown.
- Library fines for books I never read, such as “Go Set A Watchman,” added to my frustrations.
- Items from Target’s dollar bin that turned out to be more clutter than value.
- Kangol beanies based solely on someone’s compliment were not the best fashion choice.
- A potting kit I bought to grow herbs that never thrived.
- Boba tea, though inexpensive, left me with regrets.
- An electrolysis session purchased on Groupon was a lesson in false economy; multiple sessions are costly.
- Self-tanning cream that left me with an unflattering orange hue was a mistake I didn’t notice until too late.
- An infomercial product that did not live up to its promises was a waste of my money.
Regrettably, my spending mistakes will likely continue to accumulate. However, I reassure myself that I’m just a few smart choices away from financial freedom, perhaps even a vacation home in Hawaii. In the meantime, I might need a new swimsuit.
