The past few weeks have presented significant challenges, even for those of us who are usually the ones guiding you. Recent events have sparked anger, sorrow, and fatigue in many communities, leaving people feeling lost and unsure of how to find resolution.
Though you may not have created these challenges, it’s important to recognize that they are now part of your reality. As I’ve always encouraged you, the focus should not be on who caused the situation but rather on how you can contribute to making things better. We are all in this together.
It breaks my heart to see the world you are inheriting, and I know you will need to find your path through the confusion and pain. As you navigate these complexities, here are some insights to consider:
1. Expand Your Perspective
Never forget that our understanding of the world is often limited. Remember that day when we were driving and you observed that if you only knew our family, you might mistakenly believe everyone had brown eyes, just because we do? It was a humorous moment, but it illustrates an important truth: our experiences can be very narrow. Many adults lose sight of this fact. Their environments—schools, places of worship, workplaces—can create an illusion of homogeneity. Always strive to expand your perspective. Look beyond your immediate surroundings and seek to learn about diverse experiences.
2. Listen Empathetically
Listen empathetically to those who express their pain. Many adults struggle to do this. When someone shares their difficulties, it’s crucial to listen without judgment. Everyone’s experiences are shaped by their unique backgrounds. Just because you may not personally relate doesn’t mean their feelings aren’t valid. Work to alleviate the suffering of others, without determining whose pain is more significant.
3. Mind Your Responses
Be mindful of your responses when others share their concerns. Think back to when we participated in a fundraiser for children with Type 1 Diabetes. If, during that event, I interrupted a child sharing their experience to discuss my own health issues, it would have been inconsiderate. The focus should have remained on the voices of those directly affected, allowing you the opportunity to learn from their struggles. Your own issues, while important, do not always take precedence.
4. Understand Different Perspectives
Recognize that everyone believes they are the “good guy.” One of my professors once said, “It’s not enough to be right; you must also be wise.” You may feel strongly about your viewpoint, but it’s essential to realize that others feel the same about theirs. There is a tendency to classify people into “good” and “bad” categories, but this oversimplifies complex issues. Instead, see others as individuals who may be hurting or misinformed. Education and compassion are key to bridging divides.
5. Speak Out Against Injustice
When you witness unfair treatment, do not stay silent. You have the ability to speak out against injustice, and it’s vital to use that voice. Whether it’s including someone who feels excluded or standing up against discrimination, your actions matter. It may be uncomfortable to confront these situations, but remaining silent allows harmful behaviors to persist. Your silence is a statement in itself.
6. Broaden Your Horizons
Seek to broaden your horizons. Read widely and save for travel to gain a deeper understanding of the world. Exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives will help you identify patterns and challenge injustices more effectively.
7. Question Everything
Question everything, including the views of those around you. Understanding the context behind ideas and beliefs is crucial for growth and knowledge.
I believe in you and have faith that you will navigate these challenges more successfully than previous generations. My love for you is boundless, akin to the universal love shared by all parents for their children. Honor that love by extending kindness and respect to every child you encounter.
Love,
Your Mother
