In recent years, I’ve encountered numerous inquiries regarding my role as a stay-at-home mom (SAHM). While I initially dismissed these as mere casual conversation, the tone often feels judgmental, as if the questioners are assessing my worth based on my response. The questions have evolved from “What do you do all day?” to “What will you do with your extra time?” and now, as the time approaches for all my kids to be in school, the pointed question arises: “What are your plans for next year?”
Despite the guilt I have felt about being a SAHM, especially on days when chores seem to pile up and dinner plans fall apart, I’ve come to realize that my situation is quite fortunate. My husband and I have managed to live on his income for several years, and there’s no compelling reason to change that arrangement. Below, I outline five key reasons why I intend to remain a SAHM even after my kids are settled into their school routine.
1. Because I Can
The simple truth is that our family has thrived on a single income, and we are fortunate to be able to continue this lifestyle. While we may not be affluent, we enjoy a comfortable middle-class life. This stability allows me to prioritize my role at home over pursuing additional income, which is beneficial for our family dynamic.
2. To Be Available
As a stay-at-home mom, I can be present for my children during school holidays, unexpected sick days, and breaks. The reality is that children attend school for only about 180 days a year. I observe many of my working mom friends struggling to find reliable childcare for those days. My availability ensures that I can support my children without the stress of juggling work commitments.
3. To Lighten My Husband’s Load
Contrary to the notion that having a spouse who stays home adds to the burden, my situation allows me to alleviate some of the household responsibilities from my husband. He has long worked diligently to support our family, and I want to help him relax at home rather than being met with more tasks after his long days.
4. To Improve My Skills
Although I have managed household responsibilities all along, I see the potential to enhance my efficiency and effectiveness now that I will have more time. My goals include better meal planning, managing finances more effectively, and nurturing my interests, leading to a happier and more engaged version of myself. I aspire to be the best version of myself for my family.
5. Because Life Is Fleeting
I have a deep understanding of the unpredictability of life. As a cancer survivor and having faced challenges during childbirth, I recognize that the most valuable thing is quality time with family. By continuing to stay home, I can maximize our time together and reduce the chores that typically encroach on our evenings and weekends. This allows us to enjoy more moments together as a family.
So, what will I do next year? Simply enjoy my time with my children.
In conclusion, remaining a stay-at-home mom aligns with my family’s needs and values. I cherish the opportunity to support my family fully and be present during these formative years.
