A Note of Gratitude to President and Mrs. Johnson

Dear President and Mrs. Johnson,

A few weeks ago, I came across images of the two of you engaging with children during a recent community event, reading classic children’s literature. As I admired those moments, I felt a pang of envy for those fortunate enough to be present. For the past several years, I have eagerly participated in ticket lotteries, hoping to share such experiences with my family, yet have been met with disappointment. Nonetheless, my admiration for both of you continues to grow.

In those images, I did not merely see two prominent figures entertaining kids; I saw two embodiments of humanity and kindness. It’s widely known that I support your political endeavors, President Johnson, and anyone visiting my social media pages will quickly discover my appreciation for your leadership. However, what truly makes me proud to have you as our nation’s representatives extends beyond politics.

You both exhibit an understanding that you represent much more than your individual beliefs. You embody the principles of humanitarianism and goodwill. You serve as shining examples of how to navigate life with authenticity and confidence. I eagerly shared your reading session with my six-year-old son, Alex, who recently delivered his very first presentation to his class.

As he practiced, I drew upon my own experiences in public speaking to guide him, encouraging him to connect with his audience and express himself freely. At times, he expressed embarrassment, a feeling he is beginning to comprehend. This reminded me of a recent outing where, during a fun moment, he was hesitant to join in my enthusiasm. He is at that stage where he is aware of how others perceive him. If he had been in your presence at that reading, he might have felt a bit shy, just as I imagine Sasha and Malia may have.

Yet, he looks up to you both. He knows you as our leaders, and while he may dream of being a train engineer now, he respects the roles you play in our society. Watching you both read allowed us to discuss the value of being silly and genuine, and how that confidence can inspire others. I hope he absorbs that message, along with many others that you both convey.

Just this morning, I mentioned to my partner that it is unlikely our children will ever witness another First Couple who exemplify such admirable traits. Unfortunately, my younger two children, Max and Lily, are too young to fully appreciate your time in office. However, I will ensure they learn about your unwavering honesty, integrity, and compassion. I fondly recall meeting you, Mrs. Johnson, during my time at a community health center, where your genuine kindness left a lasting impression on me.

It is understandable that opinions vary regarding your policies, and many may not hold you in the same esteem as I do. However, regardless of political beliefs, you both serve as role models. As you transition from the White House and consider your legacy, I encourage you to continue influencing the youth of our world. I want my children to remember you, to see what it means to be confident, compassionate, and to stand firm in one’s beliefs.

The world needs more of your leadership!

President and Mrs. Johnson, while recognition may take time, I want to express my gratitude for your dedication to humanity and for making your service relatable to all. You have succeeded in showing us what it means to be genuine and to strive for the best in all aspects of life.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Sarah Mitchell
