Like many parents, I cherish my children deeply, but there are moments when I long for some peace and quiet. Here are five scenarios when I find myself wishing my kids would give me a temporary break:
-
During the Night
Hey there, little one, those nocturnal noises you hear—like raccoons rummaging through trash and owls hooting—are reminders that it’s time to be asleep. If you’re feeling scared or need a cuddle, I’m all in. However, if you’re awake seeking snacks at 3 a.m. because you skipped dinner or want another story because of an itchy bug bite, I’m going to need you to take that request somewhere else. -
When They’re a Sticky Mess
If you find yourself covered in anything from syrup to paint, please do me a favor and step outside until I can gather myself. Honestly, even if you were coated in something fancy like sauvignon blanc, I would still need a moment to prepare for the cleanup. -
Before Dawn
There’s nothing quite like being jolted awake too early in the morning by a child who seems completely oblivious to the concept of time. Just because the sun is peeking through the window doesn’t mean you should leap onto my bed without warning! A donut wouldn’t hurt as a peace offering next time. -
During Intimate Moments
It’s quite awkward when a child breezes into the bedroom during private moments and asks why we are so close. Extra points for the concern when you turn to your other parent and ask if they are hurting me. Let’s just agree that some things are better left unseen, and you should quietly retreat from the room. -
In the Bathroom
No matter what, you always seem to follow me to the bathroom. Suddenly, you become overly curious about my intentions, loudly announcing whether I’m there for a pee or a poo. I suspect this is your little revenge for my earlier potty-training efforts, but I assure you, it’s a potty break, not a potty party.
It’s completely normal for parents to desire a little solitude from their children in certain situations. Yet, before long, you’ll find that their charm is utterly irresistible—most of the time.
