Over the course of nearly nine years of motherhood, I’ve undergone significant transformation. If New Mom Sarah were to meet Present-Day Karen, the conversation might unfold like this:

(knock on the door)

New Mom Sarah: Hi there! Um, I hope I’m not intruding, but I just noticed your little one is playing outside alone in the front yard.

Present-Day Karen: Oh, he is? No worries! We let him do that regularly.

New Mom Sarah: Really? Aren’t you concerned he might run into the street, or worse, get kidnapped?

Present-Day Karen: Not really. He’s outside quite a bit. My bigger concern is that a neighbor might report me! Wait, are you new to the neighborhood?

New Mom Sarah: No, I was just passing by and thought I should check in. I mean, what if a tree branch falls and hits him, or he gets stung by a bee? Plus, he’s not even wearing shoes.

Present-Day Karen: True, I tell him to wear his shoes all the time. But you know how 3-year-olds are…

New Mom Sarah: (momentarily shocked)

Present-Day Karen: Seriously, he’ll be okay.

New Mom Sarah: I could sit outside with him until you finish whatever you’re doing.

Present-Day Karen: Oh, that’s not necessary. I’m perpetually busy! So unless you want to move in… just kidding!

New Mom Sarah: (speechless)

Present-Day Karen: Want to come in? You look exhausted. A nap on the couch might do you good.

New Mom Sarah: I haven’t slept much. She’s teething, and I have to check on her every couple of hours.

Present-Day Karen: Come on in! I was just going to let my 3-year-old watch some TV while I work. Your little one is welcome to join.

New Mom Sarah: That’s sweet, but she’s already had her half hour of Sesame Street today. I limit her screen time.

Present-Day Karen: (laughs heartily) You’re joking, right?

New Mom Sarah: Nope! I don’t want her to get addicted to too much TV.

Present-Day Karen: Right. (casually turns off the TV that’s been playing for hours) So, I’m heating up some nuggets, but let’s be honest, my 3-year-old will probably end up having chocolate cake for dinner. The older kids eat so fast that he might not even get a chance to take a bite!

New Mom Sarah: (speechless)

Present-Day Karen: (to her 6-year-old) Get off the roof of the car!

New Mom Sarah: How many kids do you have?

Present-Day Karen: Three! But it often feels like I have a whole daycare running around here.

New Mom Sarah: Where’s the other one?

Present-Day Karen: Not sure! I should probably check in; I think she’s over at a neighbor’s.

New Mom Sarah: (speechless)

Present-Day Karen: Okay, I have a million things to juggle—making a phone call, folding laundry, changing a diaper, figuring out lunch for the 3-year-old, and writing a blog post. So, are we done here?

New Mom Sarah: (momentarily lost for words) Uh, yeah. Just checking—are you sure he’s all right out there?

Present-Day Karen: I can bring him inside if it makes you feel better. I mean, his brother is out there too, so how bad can it be? (sounds of crying)

New Mom Sarah: Are you going to see why he’s crying?

Present-Day Karen: (listens for a moment) That’s not his hurt cry! He’s totally faking it—can’t you tell?

New Mom Sarah: Aren’t you worried? I don’t want to be overly paranoid, but I definitely am. You know, first-time mom here! (nervous laugh)

Present-Day Karen: I get it, sweetie. (gives New Mom Sarah a slightly longer hug than usual) It does get easier, I promise. (whispers) Go home and take a nap while you still can, okay?
