The Innovative Approach of Parenting

This week, my 5-year-old son, Liam, and I decided to engage in a creative activity (which he humorously refers to as “arts and farts,” and I have no intention of correcting him because it captures my sentiment perfectly). He expressed interest in crafting a snowman, but after creating countless variations this winter, I proposed a different idea: a Valentine’s Day project.

“Let’s draw and cut out a large heart,” I suggested. “Then we can add decorations.” It may not be a Pinterest masterpiece, but he’s only 5, after all.

“Okay,” he replied slowly, picking up the marker I handed him. “Just try to make the heart big enough so we have space to decorate,” I added.

He nodded, his tongue peeking out in concentration. However, what he produced on the construction paper resembled anything but a heart—instead, it looked more akin to something rather unfortunate.

“Oh, sweetheart, do you need help drawing a heart? Let me show you,” I said, unaware of the impending chaos. I attempted to explain by drawing dashed lines for him to connect, guided his hand repeatedly, and even drew a heart for him to trace. After twenty minutes, 30 attempts, and a stack of crumpled paper, I began to hear the familiar internal dialogue that surfaces during challenging parenting moments.

The Critical Mom voice chimed in, exclaiming, “Why can’t he grasp this? He’s failing at arts and crafts!” The Guilt-ridden Mom voice lamented, “This is my fault; I should be doing more.” The Exhausted Mom was ready to collapse from the strain of this fruitless activity and whispered, “Can’t we just watch a show instead?” The Cheerleader Mom was energetically encouraging, “If you can’t do it, who can?” Meanwhile, the Wine-loving Mom glanced at her watch, contemplating if it was too early for a glass. Lastly, the Melodramatic Mom was in tears, convinced she’d failed entirely, exclaiming, “I can’t even teach him to draw a heart!”

But then, the Creative Mom intervened. “Why don’t we try drawing an uppercase ‘V’? Perfect! Now, let’s create two peaks at the top of the ‘V.’ Yes! You did it, Liam! You made a heart!”

And he did! However, he was so worn out from the effort that he opted out of the rest of the craft. I was relieved, as I was already late for my own rendezvous with a much-deserved glass of wine.
