Letter to a Young Advocate for Equality

Dear Clara,

I’ve noticed that you’ve taken to calling various objects “Lipstick” quite frequently lately. I must ask you to reconsider this naming trend. While it’s charming that you wish to name your favorite bear Chapstick, let’s draw the line at “Lipstick.” You’re only 4, after all! And just a gentle reminder, my Lancôme makeup brushes are not for your imaginative playtime, especially while I’m busy preparing dinner.

Your time to explore makeup will come, but until then, I want to share some important insights with you.

Not Everyone Needs to Be the Same

As Halloween approached last year, I felt a bit smug that you had chosen a unique costume. Out of 16 girls in your class, five were going as Elsa, but you opted for Peter Pan, a character I had some reservations about due to the outdated stereotypes in that story. However, I admired Peter’s spirit and creativity.

Yet, on Halloween morning, you insisted on being “Headband Girl.” Initially, I was perplexed. This character didn’t exist in any traditional sense, but you were determined. So, you donned multiple headbands and a colorful cape, confidently heading to school. Your imaginative take on being a superhero—one you created yourself—made me realize that you were the one leading the way.

But then, I witnessed a moment of sadness when you and a classmate both wanted to be Elsa. This brings me to my next point.

Everyone Can Shine

It may seem contradictory, but I want you to understand that anyone can embody strength and brilliance. Just because you admire Elsa doesn’t mean someone else can’t as well. The world is vast enough to accommodate many bright lights. You will learn that society often tries to stifle women’s power. Don’t allow that to happen. Empower others, especially fellow women, and create a supportive network. The world needs to see women lifting each other up.

Your Identity Is Your Strength

You adore Ariel, and I understand why. Mermaids are mesmerizing, and Ariel’s ability to explore the ocean depths is enchanting. She also possesses a powerful voice that draws people in. You, too, have an inner magic that I hope you recognize.

Remember, you don’t have to abandon your true self to achieve happiness. Compromise is sometimes necessary, but never at the expense of who you are. Your uniqueness is what makes you special; embrace it.

About That Lipstick

Now, let’s circle back to the lipstick. When you ask if you look beautiful after applying lip gloss, I want to reassure you that your beauty comes from within. It’s the light in your eyes and your genuine spirit that captivates me. You don’t need external adornments to define your worth. You are already brilliant, my dear.

Keep pushing forward, Clara. The world awaits your brilliance.

With all my love,

Mom
