Recently, I have found myself in a few challenging situations where I was unsure of the right course of action. One incident involved my child getting accidentally injured by a friend’s child—specifically, being hit in the head with a rock. Should I intervene? After all, it was an accident, and I knew the other child was remorseful. Despite my instincts to speak up, I ultimately chose to remain silent.
In another case, I learned about a teenager, who is the child of a casual acquaintance, engaging in some concerning and illegal activities. This news troubled me, particularly because I would be devastated if my own child were involved in such behavior. The dilemma persisted: Should I say something or remain uninvolved?
If I were in either of those scenarios, I would want to be alerted. I believe many parents find themselves in similar positions, torn between speaking up or holding back. Therefore, let me be unequivocal:
If my child throws a rock and accidentally injures yours, please notify me, regardless of the circumstances. If my child disrespects you, I need to know. If my child is involved in drug use, please tell me. If you suspect my child is in a location without permission, inform me. If you overhear rumors about my child’s drug use, even if you’re uncertain of their accuracy, I want to hear it.
If you think my child may have overindulged at a party or has been dishonest with me, please share that information. If my child is bullying others or simply behaving unkindly, I need to know. If my child is in a relationship that raises red flags, or is using inappropriate language around peers, please tell me.
If my spouse were to be unfaithful (hypothetically speaking), I would expect to be informed. If I have something obvious, like a visible booger or a wardrobe malfunction, I want to be made aware. If any concerning behavior comes to light—whether it’s about my child associating with questionable individuals or engaging in inappropriate online activities—I want you to inform me.
If something is occurring that isn’t mentioned here and you feel conflicted about whether to tell me, please don’t hesitate. If you need a way to approach me about any of these issues, simply say: “Remember when you mentioned that you wanted to be informed if your child was misbehaving?”
