Thank You For Accepting Me: A Love Letter from an Autistic Man to His Future Partner

From an early age, I understood that love and marriage were destined for my future. I imagined meeting my soulmate by 25, starting a family by 30, and ultimately experiencing unparalleled happiness in life.

My journey has been anything but straightforward. After being diagnosed with autism at the age of four, I transitioned from a life of confusion about my limited speech to attending therapy sessions that equipped me with the tools to thrive. Today, I travel across states, sharing my experiences of overcoming challenges related to autism, with you often cheering me on from the audience.

Each day we spend together, I promise to express my love unconditionally. As a child, I struggled with touch and sensory overload, but now I cherish affection, a significant milestone for many on the spectrum. During disagreements, I will strive to communicate effectively and understand your viewpoint. I will also share when I need some solitude to decompress from sensory overload. Moreover, during our shared achievements, I will make it a point to express how proud I am of you.

Our wedding day will undoubtedly be one of my happiest moments, as I will have you by my side. When we discuss the possibility of children, I will seek guidance from my parents based on their parenting experiences with me. My aspiration is to be the kind of father my dad was—supportive during both joyous and challenging times.

Love has always been a desire of mine, though it often brings mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement. I remember the anguish of being bullied in school, especially when a peer once told me I would never find someone to love me because I was different. That hurt deeply, but I was determined to prove otherwise. Over the years, I’ve had several relationships, and now I realize that finding you was never a question of “if,” but rather “when.”

Thank you for fully accepting me, quirks and all. You are the love I have yearned for throughout my life, and what we share is a peaceful bond I wouldn’t trade for anything. I will always be grateful to you for this.

Inspired by the heartfelt words of Jordan LeeAnn on our blog regarding love and acceptance, I wanted to share my own story.
