To the parents who have experienced the unimaginable pain of losing a child to gun violence, I can no longer express my condolences with the word “sorry.” Such a term falls short of capturing the depth of your sorrow. It does not alleviate your grief, nor does it restore the lives of your beloved children.
My sorrow began on December 14, 2012, the day of the Newtown tragedy, and it has persisted ever since. Yet, despite the expressions of regret, the frequency of mass shootings continues to rise. In response, I created a Facebook page called Twenty Six Seeds of Love for Newtown, a small gesture of solidarity for those affected. However, I recognize that my efforts are insufficient.
Saying “sorry” often feels like a way to ease my own discomfort rather than addressing the profound injustice you are facing. The tragedies in San Bernardino, Roseburg, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, along with daily gun violence, remain unchanged by my apologies. As a society, we have failed you—we have failed to confront these tragedies as preventable injustices that leave parents grappling with the loss of their children.
While many may move on from such horrors, your journey is an ongoing struggle. You are compelled to navigate a world forever altered by your loss, serving a sentence for a crime you did not commit. This reality gnaws at me, preventing me from feeling secure as I drop my children off at school, the fear of the next shooting always looming.
At this juncture, I no longer find value in discussing the different sides of the gun issue. What we need is a collective commitment to humanity, uniting for the cause of reducing gun violence. I care deeply about your pain and the anguish it brings. We must all strive to ensure that no other parents endure this heartache. We should envision a world filled with the laughter of children rather than the echoes of gunfire.
It is imperative that we prioritize the safety of our children and our communities above all else. We are all human, and we share a common desire to protect our families. Thus, I will refrain from expressing sorrow again. Instead, I wish you peace in whatever form it may come. I stand ready to assist you in any way I can. Together, we must cultivate the courage and resolve to end this cycle of suffering.
