The most disheartening aspect of this photo is the assumption that a larger woman toppled over a cart due to laziness.
I suffer from a spinal condition known as spondylolisthesis. This occurs when one of the vertebrae in the spine shifts forward and becomes misaligned. While it can affect any section of the spine, it is most frequently seen in the lower back (lumbar spine). Some individuals experience no symptoms, while others endure varying degrees of back and leg pain. For me, the longer I stand, the more numb and weak my legs become, sometimes leading to falls. Additionally, my obesity complicates my back issues. I’ve realized that I’ve used food as a coping mechanism for my mental health struggles, battling my weight on a daily basis, and I’ve recently started going to the gym. However, the fight continues.
This incident occurred several years ago (around 2012). I was grappling with significant mental health challenges and physical discomfort that day. While grocery shopping for my family, I used a cart to help me navigate. As I attempted to grab a case of soda for my husband—who consumes it in large quantities—the cart tipped over. I caught a glimpse of a flash of light and heard some young girls giggling. To be honest, I brushed it off, as I’ve grown accustomed to the mockery and negative comments directed at me.
A few months later, I stumbled upon this image on a site that poked fun at Walmart shoppers. I’ve also seen it associated with false narratives regarding the event. Fortunately, my face wasn’t captured in the image.
I feel compelled to share this because it’s troubling how easily people find humor in the struggles of those with disabilities. While my challenges may not be visible, they are indeed real. The next time you encounter images that ridicule others, remember that you are unaware of their personal battles. It’s never just harmless fun to laugh at someone.

My obesity is primarily a result of the American diet, coupled with my mental health issues, including major depressive disorder, PTSD, and avoidant personality disorder. I’ve endured emotional trauma that has contributed to these conditions, leading me to use food as a way to cope.
I did not ask to be photographed during a vulnerable moment in my life. It’s incorrect to assume that my weight is solely a reflection of laziness or a desire to be on disability. Unfortunately, those with obesity are often dehumanized and ridiculed. I merely seek awareness that those who are overweight are still people deserving of dignity.
It’s important to clarify that I’m not advocating for the acceptance or promotion of obesity, as it poses significant health risks. Nor am I seeking pity. What I ask for is compassion, understanding, and respect as a fellow human being. Please treat me as such!
