At 46 years old, I find myself firmly entrenched in the middle age bracket. Let’s face it: very few of us will reach 92, so I’m likely on the decline. While I don’t feel “old,” I certainly can’t claim to be young anymore. This is why I have a fondness for the term “tween,” a label crafted for those navigating a space between youth and adulthood. We need a term that sounds more appealing than “middle-aged.” Perhaps “seasoned youth” or “young-at-heart” would suffice. I’ll keep brainstorming.
For now, here are 50 reasons I feel like I’m neither here nor there:
- I’ve outgrown the miniskirt phase.
- I’m too young to disdain contemporary music, or refer to it as “that noise.”
- I’m past the age of tolerating nonsense.
- I’m too young to utter, “In my day…”
- I’ve aged out of trampoline jumps and jarring amusement park rides.
- I’m not quite at the stage for bladder control products.
- I’m beyond being labeled “hot.”
- I’m too young to be considered “handsome.”
- I’ve outgrown the dream of silky, shiny hair.
- I’m still young enough to desire a trendy haircut.
- I’ve aged past excessive drinking.
- I’m too young to rely solely on prune juice and Maalox.
- I’m too old to lack strong opinions.
- I’m too young to fully trust my own wisdom.
- I’m aware my body is not what it was at 25.
- I’m still hopeful about regaining that 25-year-old physique.
- I’m too old to consider having more children.
- Technically, I’m too young for grandchildren.
- I struggle to grasp the appeal of fan fiction, memes (what are those?), and anime.
- I’m still curious about fan fiction, memes (is that like “peeps” for moms?) and anime.
- I’ve accepted that I won’t be the first woman to evade aging through creams—unless a fountain of youth is discovered.
- I’m still grappling with the reality of worsening wrinkles.
- I’m too old to master walking gracefully in heels.
- I’m too young to wear those unattractive orthopedic shoes.
- I’ve outgrown sexy dance moves.
- I’m young enough to keep dancing until the end!
- I’m too old to overlook the small pleasures in life.
- I’m too young to consider simply moving in the morning a joy.
- I’m too old to be referred to as a girl.
- I’m too young to be called “ma’am” or “lady.” I still enjoy being called “miss”—let me have my dream!
- I’ve aged out of glittery makeup and frosted lipstick.
- I’m too young to have to draw on my lips or eyebrows.
- I’m too old to waste hours on a terrible movie when I could be cleaning the kitchen.
- I’m still young enough to stay awake during a great film.
- I’ve outgrown the enjoyment of fast food, despite occasional cravings.
- I’m too young to need fiber with every meal.
- I’m too old to forget sunscreen.
- I’m too young for a lengthy morning routine.
- I’m too old to understand why people don’t see that Lady Gaga is a lesser Madonna.
- I’m young enough to tap my foot to elevator music.
- I’ve aged out of sleeping on the cold, hard ground.
- I’m too young for guided tours.
- I’m too old for car escapades.
- I’m still young enough to enjoy more than just a bed.
- I’ve learned that any new physical activity has consequences the next day.
- I’m too young to stop exploring new experiences.
- I’m too old for reliable short-term memory.
- I’m too young for my long-term memories to be my only remembrances.
- I’m too old to check everything off my bucket list.
- I’m too young to stop adding to it.
