Recently, I came across a quote on social media that resonated with me: “Embrace the glorious mess that you are.” This sentiment aligns with my perspective on life. Anyone who knows me can affirm that I fully embrace the chaos that often accompanies parenting.
Messes can arise from our children, stem from our own actions, or unexpectedly descend upon us like an unanticipated challenge. Life is replete with these messes, and while I accept their inevitability, I take issue with the notion that balance is unattainable, as suggested in a lengthy post following the aforementioned quote. The author claimed to be “Against BALANCE…” and argued that, for many women, balance equates to perfection. I concur that this confusion exists, but I firmly believe that balance remains essential.
Balance is defined as “an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.” As parents, it is crucial for us to maintain an upright and relatively stable presence. And even those without children aspire to achieve this balance. Moments of imbalance are normal—whether due to unexpected events or simply life’s unpredictability. The key is to regain our footing.
One common misconception among women is equating balance with the ability to do it all, which is simply unattainable. The author of the post shared a brief list of what helped her find balance in her life: she ate, prayed, and loved. While these actions were not perfectly balanced, they ultimately led her to happiness. However, to truly cultivate balance, we must include other vital components: physical activity, work, and quality time with family, friends, and ourselves.
In reality, life often demands difficult choices. You might prioritize exercise while sacrificing leisure time, or focus on work at the expense of family time. Each side of our metaphorical seesaw must remain filled with critical elements. When life’s pressures mount, we frequently find ourselves with more obligations than we can manage. The to-do list grows with tasks such as home renovations, social commitments, and personal projects.
Achieving balance requires recognizing and accepting our limitations. When unexpected challenges disrupt our equilibrium, we must reassess our priorities and remove items from the overloaded side of the scale. For instance, if you planned to bake a birthday cake from scratch, consider purchasing one instead—your children won’t mind. Perhaps this isn’t the year to tackle that bathroom renovation.
The truth is, you can’t do it all without sacrificing your mental well-being. Life will occasionally present moments of effortless balance, only to be disrupted by unforeseen events—a family emergency, a job loss, or even a minor mishap like spilling milk on the floor. To maintain your sanity, it’s crucial to adjust accordingly.
If you find yourself overwhelmed, remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Like an elite gymnast who occasionally requires a spotter during challenging routines, we too may need assistance on our journey to balance. Whether it’s a friend, therapist, or colleague, having support can help us regain our footing.
When you cultivate the ability to identify daily priorities and ask for help when needed, you can achieve a sense of balance. And balance is indeed valuable.

Summary
Balancing life’s demands as a parent can be challenging, but it’s crucial to recognize and accept limitations. Achieving balance involves making choices, prioritizing essential activities, and accepting help when needed. By doing so, we can maintain our well-being and stability amid the chaos.
