To the Moms of Many,
I extend my sincere apologies. It’s time for me to admit defeat and acknowledge the reality of parenting multiple children. Feel free to say, “I told you so”—you’ve earned it.
Before welcoming my second child, I was relatively well-rested, maintained decent hygiene, and enjoyed regular meals. I was baffled by the warnings about never having time to eat, sleep, or shower again. I believed I had successfully balanced my old life with the demands of new motherhood.
Then came baby number two, and the truth behind those relatable memes about moms surviving on coffee and sneaking chocolate in the bathroom hit me like a ton of bricks.
I now grasp the reason behind the ever-present television, despite my earlier resolve not to let “Dora” be a babysitter. I understand why the short-lived peace of 23 minutes with slightly subdued children outweighs the guilt of filling their minds with animated distractions.
I’ve experienced the transition from preparing homemade purees for my first child to relying on budget-friendly store-bought jars for my second. I know how the artfully-prepared lunches have dwindled to a hastily made peanut butter sandwich on stale bread.
I comprehend the moment you realize your child is the “messy kid” in class—overlooked milk on their face and remnants of breakfast in their car seat as you juggle two kids into daycare. I understand that even the best-laid plans can derail; baths become optional, teeth may go unbrushed, and bedtime stories are often skipped.
I see how you and your partner collapse on the couch after finally getting the kids to bed, questioning where the last two hours of your lives vanished. I understand why you give in to tantrums, offer snacks for a moment of silence, and hand over your phone to prevent a meltdown during a pediatric appointment. (I, too, swore I’d never be that parent. Oh, the irony!)
I know how it can feel like you’re working just to pay for daycare, realizing that what once felt manageable with one child seems nearly impossible with two or more. Did you know that kids require food every day? Apparently, they do.
I understand the neglected makeup, the cute dress collecting dust in the closet, and the unfinished novel sitting on your nightstand, forever paused on page 18. I recognize the discomfort of not recognizing any songs on the radio and only consuming news through social media—often in the form of someone’s brunch pictures.
I empathize with the chronic tardiness despite your best efforts and why leaving the house becomes a monumental task. I get the frustration of packing snacks, searching for lost shoes, and nursing a baby who suddenly needs feeding right after being strapped into the car seat.
I understand how tempers flare more easily, patience wears thin, and feelings of anger can surface more than you’d wish. Some days, despite the overwhelming love you have for your children, it may feel like you’re merely surviving motherhood instead of truly enjoying it.
However, here’s the silver lining: Despite the initial fear of never being able to love another child as much as your first, your heart expands to embrace each new baby with a unique yet equally fierce love. Even when it feels like you’re navigating life blindfolded, you will find immense joy in this whirlwind of parenting. Adding more children to your family isn’t the end of your previous life; it’s the beginning of a beautifully different chapter.
Sincerely,
A Mom of Two Who Finally Understands
