7 Roles of Motherhood I Never Expected

When I embarked on the journey of motherhood, my expectations were limited to the usual baby-care duties: changing diapers, breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, and preparing healthy meals. However, I quickly discovered that the role of a mother encompasses a myriad of unexpected responsibilities. Below are seven surprising roles that come with being a mother.

1. Hazardous Materials Specialist

Prior to becoming a mother, I was blissfully unaware of the complexities involved in laundry. Now, I can immediately identify which laundry detergents are effective against “protein stains,” a term that resonates deeply with mothers. I’ve also honed my skills in swiftly cleaning up vomit from walls in the wee hours of the morning.

2. Chief Archivist

Organization has never been my strong suit. I often struggle with how to categorize my papers, leaving bills in towering piles until I receive multiple reminders. The influx of children’s artwork and keepsakes has been overwhelming. Every day, I find myself holding onto items, such as the journal tracking my first child’s diaper habits, and grappling with the decision to keep or discard them, alongside the countless drawings produced daily.

3. Flight Attendant

This role is defined by the number of times I buckle a child into their seat and then find myself repeatedly getting up to quench the thirst of an irritable passenger. I’ve also perfected the art of maintaining a cheerful disposition, even in moments of frustration.

4. Water Bottle Researcher/Tester

Over the past five years, I’ve spent an astonishing $923 on sippy cups and water bottles. I’m now resigned to the fact that finding a sippy cup that doesn’t leak, can be opened independently by my child, and doesn’t become a breeding ground for mildew is nearly impossible.

5. Social Secretary

Growing up in the carefree 70s and 80s, I don’t recall my mother knowing the names of my friends until I reached college. Today, however, I manage an extensive network of other parents and numerous playdates, not to mention the plethora of after-school activities. My calendar resembles the work of someone desperately trying to decode a complicated puzzle.

6. Hoarders’ Removal Specialist

This role complements my duties as Chief Archivist. Our family of four resides in a cozy apartment, which necessitates regular decluttering. I’ve become quite ruthless when it comes to disposing of broken toys and outdated school projects, making it a monthly ritual to sort through and donate items to Goodwill.

7. Valet

For those with meticulously organized wardrobes, the seasonal rotation of clothing is a common task. I, however, have never engaged in this practice and prefer to mix seasonal clothing. Yet, as a mother, every few months involves the laborious task of sorting through outgrown clothes, deciding what to store for future use, and preparing new clothing for my younger child.

Ultimately, I have come to view “mother” as an umbrella term that encompasses all these sub-roles. Interestingly, I find enjoyment in many of these tasks, and I believe I have become a more organized and capable individual since becoming a parent. Plus, I’ve mastered the art of tackling those pesky protein stains.
